Job Description

The Wits School of Education (WSoE) invites applications an academic post at the level of Senior Lecturer in Higher Education, located within the Curriculum and Social Sciences Division.

We are seeking an experienced and research-active academic with expertise in in higher education, with a particular focus on curriculum and assessment, who can contribute meaningfully to postgraduate teaching, postgraduate supervision, research, funding acquisition and collaborative scholarship.

The successful candidate will also provide leadership in coordinating the Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education (PGDipHE), a flagship programme aimed at academic staff development across the University, offered in both contact and distance modes.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Supervision:


o Design and deliver postgraduate and undergraduate courses in the field of Higher Education, with emphasis on curriculum studies and assessment, including but not limited to:
o Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
o Curriculum Development in Higher Education
o Assessment in Higher Education
o New Directions in Higher Education
o Undergraduate B.Ed. assessment modules
o Contribute to Assessment and Evaluation programme.
o Supervise postgraduate research projects at Honours, master's, and doctoral levels.
o Mentor early-career academics and postgraduate students.

Research and Scholarship:


o Develop and sustain an active research agenda in curriculum studies and assessment in Higher Education.
o Publish peer-reviewed scholarly publications.
o Present research at national and international conferences.
o Collaborate on interdisciplinary and multi-institutional research projects.
o Apply for and manage external research grants and partnerships.

Programme Coordination and Administration:


o Coordinate the PGDipHE programme, including curriculum design, delivery, quality assurance, and student support.
o Lead student recruitment, programme marketing, and admissions.
o Manage assessment processes, moderation, and programme evaluation.
o Strengthen the PGDipHE alumni network and institutional partnerships.
o Contribute to School and Faculty-level academic planning, policy development, and committee work.

Minimum Qualifications


A PhD in Education focusing on Curriculum Studies in Higher Education, with emphasis on assessment.

Relevant Experience

Senior Lecturer Level:


o Minimum of 3 years of higher education teaching experience.
o Experience in academic staff development or curriculum innovation.
o A record of peer-reviewed publications in accredited journals, with evidence of ongoing research productivity in Higher Education, particularly in curriculum studies with a focus on assessment.
o Experience in supervising postgraduate students at Honours, master's and PhD levels.
o Participation in collaborative research or institutional projects.
o An established research profile with publications in education, demonstrating expertise in Higher Education Studies, particularly in curriculum studies with a focus on assessment.

Professional Competencies


o Pedagogical expertise in higher education, curriculum, and assessment.
o Digital literacy and experience with blended or online learning platforms.
o Strong interpersonal and collegial skills, with the ability to lead collaboratively.

Remuneration


Remuneration is commensurate with qualifications and experience subject to University policy.
