Job Description


The department seeks a person to lecture subjects on the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering. The person must support the department in pursuit of its academic and research objectives which include teaching on the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes; undertake research and innovation; contribute to curriculum development and design; engage in work integrated learning, and service-learning activities. The person should be able to lecture some of the following subjects: Communication & Network Engineering, Digital Embedded Systems, Information Communication Engineering, Wireless Networks, Digital Communications

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Minimum Requirements (Senior lecturer):

  • A doctoral qualification in Electrical Engineering / Computer Engineering. All underpinning qualifications
  • must be in Electrical Engineering / Computer Engineering.
  • At least 4 years lecturing experience at the higher education level or 4 years related industry experience at the
  • senior level or a combination of the two.
  • Demonstrable evidence of publications (peer reviewed) in the Electrical Engineering / Computer Engineering
  • or related fields.
  • Track record of successful postgraduate supervision.
  • Evidence of appropriate academic and research leadership.
  • xe2x80xa2Must be registered with ECSA Professional Body or must be willing to register within 12 months of employment.
  • (The selection panel's assessment will be aligned with the institutional promotions criteria)
Recommendation:
  • Knowledge and experience in Electronic Communications.
  • Developed and lead research in Electronic Communications.
  • Established collaborations, fundraising and postgraduate recruitment and supervision.
  • Contributed to academic initiatives to enhance learning according to the needs of the industry or teaching & learninggoals.
  • Evidence of incorporating teaching & learning and research & innovation outcomes into academic project.
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

Senior Lecturer
  • Teaching and Learning: Lectures both undergraduate and postgraduate subjects. Develops subject guides in compliance withUniversity policies. Uses appropriate teaching and learning methods, practices and technologies. Develops learning materials forstudents. Assists students with challenges in understanding the subject content and manages the appointment of tutors and/ormentors.
  • Academic Management - Development and Implementation of the department and faculty strategic goals in line with the institutionalstrategic goals. Represent the department at various committees.
  • Administration - Assists with the registration of students. Administer student attendance registers, assessment records and uploadslearners' results to the Marks Administration System. Set and conduct formative assessments. Examine and moderate summative assessments. Reports progress on curriculum developments.
  • Community Service & Outreach - Contributes to community initiatives by integrating community interventions into the curriculum.
  • Counselling - Provides academic counselling and mentoring to learners. Identify students at risk & implement mitigation strategies.
  • Quality Assurance - Contributes to Quality Assurance through committee meetings and the submission of relevant documents, asrequested. Monitors the impact of QA recommendations within the department and implements appropriate interventions.
  • Recruitment / Admissions / Marketing - Contributes to the planning for "Open Dayxe2x80x9d and attends CPUT's "Open Day" event.
  • Personal / Professional Development - Keeps abreast with current developments in their field of study and its curricula implications.Keeps abreast with developments of professional conduct within the University. Register as a member of professional bodies toremain at the cutting edge of their discipline. Regularly engages in current professional development and other skills developmentactivities.
  • Human Resources Management - Subscribes to and abides by the University performance management system and identifytraining needs for personal career development.
  • Industry Advisory Board and Partnerships - Liaise with commerce and industry regarding Experiential Training, new techniques /technologies, and research projects.
  • Mentoring - Contribute towards the development of junior academic staff. Guidance of staff (mentor). Creative assistance/renderingof assistance on all aspects of learning material/curriculum development (content, presentation, preparation of student guides,equipment, etc.). Assistance with the presentation of seminars and workshops/work sessions. Guidance and assistance to lecturersto lecturers in subject field.
  • Health & Safety - Ensure compliance with University health and safety rules and regulations
  • Research - Conducts research, supervise and conduct lectures with post-graduate students, publishes regularly e.g. journalarticles, books, chapters in books. Keeps abreast of professional literature. Attends local/national conferences to present research.
