Summary
To lead and optimize the design, development, integration, and operation of electrical, control and instrumentation (EC&I), software, and systems for heavy machinery. This role requires a hands-on engineering leader with deep technical expertise and a strong track record in multidisciplinary system integration, from concept through to commissioning and operational support.
Description
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead cross-functional engineering teams in EC&I, software, and systems integration projects.
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement in system design and performance.
- Develop and implement engineering standards, best practices, and governance frameworks.
Design & Development
- Oversee the design and specification of electrical systems, control architectures, and instrumentation for heavy machinery.
- Lead the development and integration of embedded and supervisory control software (e.g., PLC, SCADA, HMI).
- Ensure seamless integration of mechanical, electrical, and software systems.
Project Execution
- Manage engineering deliverables across the full project lifecycle: concept, design, prototyping, testing, commissioning, and handover.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, procurement, and operations teams to ensure design-for-manufacture and operational reliability.
- Conduct risk assessments, FMEAs, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Operational Support
- Provide technical leadership during commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance optimization of machinery in the field.
- Support root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for system failures or underperformance.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Control Systems, or related field.
8+ years of experience in engineering roles, with at least 3 years in a senior or lead capacity.
Proven experience in:
- Designing and integrating EC&I systems for heavy industrial or mining machinery.
- Developing and deploying control software (PLC, SCADA, HMI).
- Systems engineering and multidisciplinary integration.
- Familiarity with relevant standards (e.g., IEC, ISO, SANS) and safety regulations.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Strong leadership and team coordination skills.
- Deep technical knowledge in EC&I and control systems.
- Proficiency in engineering tools (e.g., EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000).
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
Desirable:
- Experience in mining, materials handling, or mobile heavy equipment.
- Exposure to Industry 4.0 technologies, IoT integration, and data analytics.
- Professional registration (e.g., PrEng, CEng) is a plus.
