Setting the Scene:

Data ingestion and normalization in the context of FinOps represents the set of functional activities involved with processing/transforming data sets to create a common repository for your cloud cost management needs. In this context, data ingestion and normalization occurs when bringing together cloud billing data, cloud usage data, cloud utilization and performance data, on-premises CMDB or ITAM data, business-specific data, and other data points from a variety of cloud providers and IT data repositories to create a collection of cost and usage information which can be queried to support and enable the FinOps Capabilities.

Effective FinOps practice requires access to regular streams of detailed usage, utilization and cost data, which can be categorized and analyzed to drive decision making. Unlike the world of on-premises data centers, there is no shortage of data on cloud usage. Cloud vendors produce massive amounts of very granular usage and cost data on which to base a FinOps practice.

Monitoring platforms, security platforms, and business operations applications can also provide data that will inform on utilization, location, value and usage, oftentimes at similar levels of volume and granularityxe2x80xa6so while the issue many data centers experienced was a lack of detailed data, the challenge faced by cloud users is oftentimes that there is too much. An effective data ingestion and normalization strategy should strive to provide the FinOps team with the right combination of data from

• the right source systems
• at the right timeliness to support the cadence of decision making
• at the right level of granularity to support aggregate reporting and drill down investigation
• with the appropriate standardization, augmentation, normalization

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

• Determine the list of data sources required to fulfill the current reporting and operational needs
• Determine the level of granularity required in each data source.
• Establish a data model for normalization, mapping fields from various sources to one another.
• Regularly and proactively validate data source content, and clearly understand when changes occur, react to them, adjust and re-document accordingly, and create a weekly report on anomalies.
• Ensure that the data sources and resulting repository of cost and usage information is kept accurately, is appropriately sized, backed up, and managed throughout its useful lifecycle.
• Provide and ensure everyone with a need to access information can do so
• Work with every group to determine the right metrics, measures and metadata that should be included in xe2x80x9cofficialxe2x80x9d output
• Develop reporting output expectations document (update over time as maturity grows)
• Act as a bridge between the business problems and application owners
• Analyze, transform and ultimately resolve the business problems with the help of technology.
• Work with internal clients and apply best practice methodologies to determine business requirements and to define solutions to address business, process, information and system problems, improvements or change.
• Deliver business projects in line with sponsor requirements and enterprise architecture.
• Proactive development and deployment of enhanced services and platforms, covering all the functional aspects from service/product definition through to build and deployment.
• Ensure the identification and documentation of operational gaps including user guides, templates, test cases and related user training.
• Assist with the resolution of issues pertaining to the service.
• Adhere to and follow the relevant development and support processes.
• Communicate and escalate if any issues arise or deliverables cannot be met and request assistance to ensure closure of issues.
• Take responsibility for delivery of project elements with minimal supervision

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:

• Broad understanding of Microsoft Azure Cost Optimization Levers
• Excellent team player who displays good client service orientation with well-developed administrative and organization skills
• Deep expertise in specific systems, processes and technologies that they will be required to analyze
• Meticulous attention to detail whilst working under pressure
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to listen empathetically
• Passion for Sustainability
• Ability to build rapport and engage effectively with a variety of stakeholders
• Knowledge of project management methodology
• Excellent analytical skills with the ability to convert business requirements into operational deliverables (functional requirements) to meet business objectives
• Excellent documentation skills, in particular, functional requirements, test cases, system user documentation, processes and procedures and presentations
• Very good working knowledge of Microsoft Azure, Exchange, Word, Excel Project, PowerPoint and Visio
• Understanding of systems generally used in a FinOps organization e.g. Azure Cost Optimization, Azure Insights, License Compliance and Management

Academic Qualifications and Certifications:

• A Bachelorxe2x80x99s degree or equivalent with related demonstrable experience would be advantageous
• Project management certification would be advantageous
• Azure Certification including Cost Management and Optimization

Required Experience:

• Demonstrable experience as a Business Analyst gained within a technology services environment
• Experience as a system administrator or developer would be advantageous
• Demonstrable experience in and with all operational aspects of a Services business, preferably with a Systems Integrator
• Demonstrable experience in the process of developing and implementing new services and systems
• Understanding of and experience with ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library)
• Demonstrable experience in coordinating and managing tasks, and small projects
