CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. Position Overview

CHAI is seeking a highly motivated individual with excellent analytical ability and strong communication skills to play a key role in the COVID-19 Test and Treat, Access to Oxygen, Health Facility Solar Electrification and Laboratory Access programmes in South Africa. The Senior Analyst will input to a growing CHAI team and will be expected to support the DoH to create, execute and monitor evidence-based plans and strategies. The Senior Analyst will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks, including quantitative analysis, qualitative analysis, stakeholder engagement, coordination and collaboration, and assisting with components that will contribute to investment cases, improvements in supply chains, market intelligence, demand forecasting and/or quantification.

The Senior Analyst will be based in Pretoria, South Africa and report to the relevant Programme Manager.

Program Overview

The Senior Analyst role will be a cross-cutting and will cover aspects of three inter-related programs, (i) the COVID-19 program which includes access to oxygen access and COVID test and treat, (ii) the Health Facility Solar Electrification Program, and (iii) the Laboratory Access Program.

COVID-19: The first case of corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) in December 2019 and in January 2020, the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) and subsequently in March 2020 as a pandemic. Following the declaration of a PHEIC, the COVID-19 program was established at CHAI. The COVID-19 program has evolved from an emergency response focus to a focus on three key challenges that COVID-19 has highlighted namely:

Implementation of COVID-19 Test and Treat options;
Equitable and sustainable access to oxygen and medical air; andPandemic prevention, preparedeness and response.

Health Facility Solar Electrification (HFSE): In 2010, CHAI launched a vaccine program to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with vaccine-preventable diseases by improving access to immunization services in low- and middle-income countries . One of the core pillars of this program was improving the availability and functionality of cold chain equipment (including solar-powered options) to increase the reach of cold chain networks and make substantial gains in vaccine equity. From this pillar it became apparent that there is a need to conduct on-the-ground research to generate an evidence base which contributes towards strengthening governments and development partners HFSE strategic planning, implementation, and long-term sustainability strategies. Subsequently, in 2022, the HFSE program was established to address this need.

Laboratory Access: There is a strong consensus across the global community that increasing the availability of new and novel diagnostic screening is a major priority for patients in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The Laboratory Access Team supports the provision of public sector pathology services in South Africa. This includes both conventional and point-of-care testing.

Responsibilities

• Provide support on the crosscutting country / global work streams, including through internal and external reporting as required across the 3 program areas.
• Establish and maintain communication and alignment mechanisms to ensure activity coordination and successful execution of the respective programs.
• Support the National Department of Health (NDoH) in all areas of national COVID-19, Oxygen supply efforts, Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response and Health Facility Solar Electrification; this includes planning and implementing various areas of the programs and ensuring CHAIxe2x80x99s ongoing alignment with NDoH strategic goals and priorities.
• Lead in collecting, capturing, compiling, synthesizing and routinely analysing data to inform the development of assessments, reports and other program materials.
• Maintain and manage existing databases, dashboards, survey instruments and data collection protocols.
• Landscape and engage local solar electrification service providers and evaluate their offerings against government HFSE needs, capabilities, and priority areas.
• Research and evaluate current areas of public-private partnership for HFSE and collaborations within the national health and energy systems.
• Conduct routine field supervision or assessment visits.
• Develop a thorough understanding of the healthcare and diagnostic landscape related to the medicines and equipment portfolio in South Africa and globally including key priorities, challenges and gaps to inform program development.
• Manage and establish collaborative relationships with the NDoH/NHLS, suppliers, partner organizations and other relevant stakeholders.
• Represent the programs in meetings and workshops.
• Support the Program Manager on key deliverables and ad-hoc requirements, as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelorxe2x80x99s degree in economics, public health, epidemiology, business, energy management or related work experience within the NGO/development environment.
• A minimum of three years of professional experience.
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including attention to detail and advanced technical proficiency with MS Excel, PowerPoint and Word;
• Willingness to travel within South Africa as needed.
