SCIENTIST -34007208 / SENIOR SCIENTIST -34007208B /PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST -34007208CTo perform the biological analysis of water to the International Standards Organisation (ISO), international standards in order to detect pollution in the environment and protect the citizens of Ethekwini from avoidable water borne diseases.Key Responsibility AreasSCIENTIST -34007208Responsible for safeguarding the health of Ethekwini Citizens by ensuring that the drinking water is safe for consumption and free of large bacterial loads
Performs analytical tasks and related functions in the Biology Division of Scientific Services to ensure that the municipality operates its water, wastewater, health, pollution and solid waste monitoring systems according to legislation.
Performs technical tasks and related functions in the Biology Division of Scientific Services in order to contribute to the effective operation of the Branch.
Performs and participates in the administration of the Biology Division in order to maintain effective operations.
Supervises subordinate staff (laboratory analysts and assistants) in order to ensure effective and efficient performance in undertaking methods and procedures.
Contribute to the overall performance of the Division and Scientific Services in order to empower staff and improve services capacity.
Assists and relieves other posts of Scientist within the Division to facilitate the smooth operation of the branch.SENIOR SCIENTIST -34007208BPerforms analytical tasks and related functions in the Biology Division of Scientific Services.
Analyses all samples scheduled and received by the laboratory according to the approved test method.
Performs technical tasks and related functions in the Biology Division of Scientific Services.
Investigates and assesses test methods, procedures and work instructions where required.
Performs and participates in test method development and research.
Performs technical projects and investigations as required.
Provides technical support as required within the division on matters relating to water quality, laboratory results and/or laboratory activities.
Performs and participates in the administration of the Biological Division in order to maintain effective operation.
Supervision and control of subordinate staff.
Contributes to the overall performance of the Division and Scientific Services in order to empower staff and improve service capacity.
Operates sophisticated analytical instruments and techniques within the Biology Division.
Monitor all routine analytical activities within the designated division, identify, trouble shoot and rectify the problems.
Participate in Biology Division organisation, planning and task allocation to laboratory staff.
Perform specialised water and wastewater quality investigations and projects within the Biology Division.
Provide theoretical and technical support and assistance to all staff engaged in routine analysis and tasks in the Biology Division.
Undertake research and development in respect of microbiological techniques, procedures, work methods and processes.PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST - 34007208CPerforms analytical tasks and related functions in the Biology Division of Scientific Services.

Plans, organises, co-ordinates and performs specialised water and quality investigations and projects.
Manages routine analytical activities in the Division and identify any problems.
Manages non-routine analytical activities in the Division as delegated by the Chief Scientist.
Monitor and record all maintenance on instruments and equipment within the designated work areas of the Division.
Participate in strategic planning of the Biology Division.
Participates in the design, modification and expansion of routine water quality monitoring programmes and the implementation thereof in the Biology Division.
Monitors and records laboratory resources utilised on specified routine monitoring programmes, troubleshooting, method development and projects.
Designs, plans and performs training programmes related to Biology Division activities.
Commissions new instrumentations, develops procedures and methods and training staff in the use of these procedures and methods.

Essential RequirementsSCIENTIST -34007208Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Microbiology or Biotechnology or Chemistry or Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry.
Valid motor vehicle driving license.
3 Years relevant experience.
Computer Literacy.SENIOR SCIENTIST -34007208BDiploma (NQF Level 6) in Microbiology or Biotechnology or Chemistry or Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry.
Valid motor vehicle driving license.
4 Years relevant experience.
Computer Literacy.PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST - 34007208CBachelor of Applied Science in Biotechnology (NQF Level 7) or Advanced Diploma in Chemistry (NQF Level 7) or Bachelor of Science in Industrial Chemistry (NQF Level 7) or Advanced Diploma in Analytical Chemistry (NQF Level 7) or equivalent.
Registered as a Certified Natural Scientist with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP).
Valid motor vehicle driving license.
5 Years relevant experience.
Computer Literacy.Preferred RequirementsSCIENTIST -34007208Bachelor of Applied Science in Biotechnology (NQF Level 7) or Advanced Diploma in Chemistry (NQF Level 7) or Bachelor of Science in Industrial Chemistry (NQF Level 7) or Advanced Diploma in Analytical Chemistry (NQF Level 7) or equivalent.
