Ref No.: T/CM11/2022 The Research Assistant will be working with the discipline of Otorhinolaryngology to identify opportunities to improve hearing health for patients in KwaZulu-Natal. The core project aims to identify, characterize and explain factors that influence the identification, referral and management of children with hearing loss. The research team is looking for someone with good work ethic, good organizational and interpersonal skills. The person would also need to have an interest in research and have high ethical values. The research assistant will be based predominantly at the Medical School Campus but will be required to travel to health care facilities throughout KwaZulu-Natal. The incumbent will report to Dr Andile Sibiya.

The Research assistant duties will include:

  • Identification of opportunities and document preparation for grant submissions
  • Supporting the principal investigator with producing literature reviews, reports, presentations
and publications
  • Research participant coordination: recruitment, interview scheduling and recording, follow-
  • Survey and questionnaire management: Preparation, administration and collation with
competence in electronic data capture and management
  • Data management: collection, storage, analysis and graphic preparation
  • A degree at Masters, preferably in the Health Sciences
  • Evidence of working with word-processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, email and
internet packages (Especially Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office)
  • Evidence of understanding of qualitative and quantitative research
  • Familiar with citation manager (EndNote, Mendeley or Zotero)
  • Availability to work during regular working hours as duties may include file collection and
participant recruitment at health care facilities.
  • Publication record.
Essential Requirements:
  • Fluency in isiZulu;
  • 1-year previous experience as a Research assistant;
  • A degree at PhD level is an added advantage;
  • Experience in scoping reviews with at least 1 relevant publication;
  • Valid driver’s license and own reliable transport AND
  • Knowledge of Biostatistics and experience with data analytic software (NVIVO or SPSS).
