CAPRISA is an award-winning global research organisation located on the campus of the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in Durban, South Africa and undertakes research in HIV and TB at four clinical research sites in KwaZulu-Natal.
CAPRISA's goal is to undertake globally relevant and locally responsive research that contributes to understanding HIV Vaccines and Pathogenesis, Prevention and Epidemiology, the links between Tuberculosis and AIDS treatment. CAPRISA is a UNAIDS Collaborating Centre for HIV Research and Policy and is recognised as a DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in HIV Prevention and hosts the SAMRC HIV-TB Pathogenesis and Treatment Research Unit.
CAPRISA seeks to appoint a Research Assistant to join a study team of public health lawyers to work on projects related to alcohol laws, good governance and pandemic preparedness laws in multiple jurisdictions. The successful incumbent will be based at the CAPRISA Headquarters in Durban.
Minimum Requirements
LLB degree or bachelor's degree in social sciences or related field.
1-2 years of research experience in public health policy or law, legal epidemiology or qualitative research.
Interest in policy-relevant research and/or engagement with government.

Ability to work across disciplines and translate findings for public health and policy audiences.
Organizational and problem-solving skills.
Analytical ability with high attention to detail.
Able to work under pressure in a changing environment.
Managing time and work/deadline driven.
Excellent written, verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct and analyse qualitative interviews with key stakeholders.
Produce reports on laws or policies within project areas.
Contribute to the drafting and submission of high-quality manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals (both public health and legal
scholarship).
Present findings at academic conferences, workshops and stakeholder engagement forums.
Provide research implementation and administrative support, including assisting with ethics applications.
