2. SCOPE OF PRACTICE
The Professional/registered Nurse's scope of practice refers to the regulated responsibilities and roles in nursing activities. This scope of practice authorizes the Professional/Registered Nurse to undertake and perform certain interventions and activities in accordance with his/her competencies, Professional/Registered Nurses category /level and other regulatory requirements.
Professional/Registered Nurses have a responsibility to practice within their scope of practice relevant to their education.
The Professional/Registered Nurse is a person who is:
Qualified in general nursing science (minimum qualification) as prescribed by with the SA Nursing Council.
Is educated and competent to practice
comprehensive
nursing independently.
Assumes responsibility and accountability for such practice
Is registered and licensed as a professional person under the Nursing Act.
Applies knowledge of biological and natural science, psycho-social sciences and pharmacology to provide comprehensive nursing care.
Utilizes research in nursing and health-related problems to improve health care outcomes.
Demonstrates professional and clinical leadership
Promotes the professional development of self and others
Demonstrates clinical judgement and critical thinking.
3. REPORTING STRUCTURE
Reporting to the Senior Professional nurse.
4. HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

supervision - ensure all care workers are punctual, on duty and report absenteeism, check that all staff wear the correct uniform and display their name badges.
management and evaluation of care givers' work performance

5. RESIDENT CARE & CLINICAL CARE
Ensure holistic care, including clinical care to all residents with prevention of medico legal hazards i.e., falls and injuries, etc.
Ensure that all residents' complaints are investigated promptly.
Participate in the multi-disciplinary planning of resident care and the execution of such programmes. Regular ward rounds are to be carried out to ensure good nursing care; those residents are receiving their prescribed treatment and appropriate care according to their needs.
Attend to the adequate and attractive serving of meals to residents and ensure the feeding of helpless residents and correct nutrition needs are met.
Ensure that residents are cared for in a holistic, psychological and physical environment conducive to the maintenance of optimal health.
Ensure last offices are carried out according to policy.
Ensure that satisfactory interpersonal relations with residents and relatives are maintained by the staff. Ensure that the residents feel, during their stay in the home, their good name, property and reputation will be safeguarded, even after death.
6. MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS
Ensure that all Doctors' orders are carried out promptly, thus ensuring the welfare of residents. All urgent information regarding the resident's condition is reported to the medical practitioner as soon as possible.
Ensure that in the event of an emergency prompt action is taken to avoid endangering the resident's life. Whilst awaiting the arrival of the doctor, all necessary equipment, drugs and facilities must be assembled and ready for the doctor's life saving measures. If no doctor is available, life saving measures must be speedily applied to the best of your knowledge and ability.
7.
MEDICATION MANAGEMENT
The professional nurse is accountable for the administration and safekeeping of medication on her shift. Ensure all medication is administered under supervision and that all schedule 5 - 6 medication is entered in the appropriate register and checked weekly.
Every dose must be charted. Ensure that all medicines received from the pharmacy are not out of date and are kept under lock and key.
8. RECORD KEEPING
Ensure that all recordkeeping meets all legal, professional and ethical requirements and conform to Kennersley Park's requirements, policies and procedures regarding all record keeping.
9. INFECTION CONTROL
Adhere to all infection and cross infection control measures as per Kennerley Park Infection Control policy and procedures.
Conform to the universal infection control precautions and as required by relevant SA legislation regarding medical/nursing infection control measures.
10. ADMINISTRATION
Overall control or the unit/ward administration to ensure total/holistic resident care.
Ensure filing systems for administration and documentation are followed and policies & procedures are adhered to.
Financial - Maintenance of equipment in a good functional state - stock control, economic use of time, stock, equipment and manpower.
11. STOCK CONTROL
11.1 LINEN
Ensure that the ward/unit has enough linen in stock in the linen room and that the care workers adhere to Kennersley Park's policies regarding sluicing and the removal of soiled linen and laundry procedure for residents' laundry and KP linen.
All damaged/worn linen must be returned to the laundry for repair/condemning. Supervise the handling of the residents' personal laundry.
11.2 EQUIPMENT & FURNITURE
Ensure that equipment is kept in good condition and ready for instant use.
Any new, replacement or required equipment must be motivated through the proper channels.
Equipment must be inspected regularly and maintained in good working order. Stock counts to be done monthly.
No items may be lent out without being recorded and a signature obtained.
12. WARD HYGIENE
Ensure that the domestic personnel are able to carry out their duties according to standard.
Ensure that the care workers, domestic personnel and kitchen staff (waitresses) are aware of their individual cleaning duties and supervise that they are executing these duties.
Do regular inspections to ensure the ward/s are clean and tidy at all times.
Liaise with maintenance department for any repairs or maintenance required e.g., painting, plumbing, and electrical.
13. MAINTENANCE, PHARMACY, LABORATORY SERVICES
Ensure that all communications with the various departments are done through the correct channels.
Defects and breakages must be reported promptly.
Ensure all orders are submitted in the approved order books or prescription cards. Orders are to be submitted timeously.
Notify pharmacy immediately if any discrepancies occur. Check pharmacy receipts and ensure Schedule 5 - 7 drugs are kept under lock and key. All specimens and requests sent to the laboratory must be correctly labeled and accompanied by the correct forms.
14. RISK MANAGEMENT, HEALTH & SAFETY
Ensure that infection control measures are known to all staff and maintained to prevent infections.
Manage the care of residents' clothes, valuables and other belongings by ensuring that care workers execute the correct procedures and recordkeeping for current and new residents' property.
Ensure adequate means of resident identification.
The administration of medicines and scheduled drugs must be carried out with due regard to the legal requirements.
Ward duties must be assigned with due regard to the experience and capabilities of each worker.
Procedure records must be kept up to date to ensure safe nursing practices. All records are to be kept in accordance with policy or regulations. The handing over at the change of shift must be comprehensive to ensure continuity of treatment.
Ensure that nursing staff observe all regulations and the scope of professional practice. Ensure that all resident/patient care is carried out within the limits of the law and ethical codes of nursing, and that subordinates are not associated with or party to any illegal act or omission.
Statements regarding accidents or incidents must be written accurately and timeously on the appropriate form. Patients/residents at risk - e.g. for slips and falls, pressure ulcers, dehydration or malnutrition, must be identified. All members of the team must be alerted and the appropriate interventions prescribed.
15. DISASTER DRILL AND FIRE PRACTICE
Familiarize yourself and ensure that all staff are familiar with the evacuation plan, location of fire
hydrants and hoses and know how to use them.
16. PROFESSIONALISM
Personal and Professional behavior are in line with the codes of conduct rules and principles of behavior as determined by the profession and your employer at all times.
The professional nurse is responsible for her own continuing education, maintaining competencies and
keeping up to date with development/changes in the health care field.
