Vacancy: Qualitative Research Assistant Primary Role: Research Assistant
Based at: Adrenergy Research Innovations
Full time/part time: Full time, 6-month contract JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for informed consent, subject enrollment, and qualitative (individual interviews, focus groups) and quantitative (brief survey) with owners, stylists, and clients at hair salons and barbershops across Umlazi, Isipingo and the Berea OVERVIEW OF STUDIES:

  • A longitudinal study looking at offering PrEP, contraception, and STI testing and treatment in adult women at hair salons in Umlazi and the Berea. This position would focus on conducting interviews and focus groups with study participants, salon owners, and salon stylists.
  • A survey looking at interest in offering PrEP, STI testing, and other sexual health services to adult men in barbershops and unisex hair salons in Umlazi, Isipingo and the Berea. This position would offer brief surveys to male salon clients and to salon owners and barbers.
REPORTS TO:
Research Project Manager in Umbilo, Durban and Study Principal Investigator in Boston, United States. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for carrying out research activities in accordance with the guidelines as provided by the Project Managers and researchers.
  • Recruit and enroll participants and conduct interviews and focus groups using standardized guidelines.
  • Record, organize, and capture results of questionnaires in preparation for data analysis.
  • Manage the processing of interview and focus group recordings for transcription and translation into English with contractor(s).
  • Write regular research progress reports to Project Manager.
  • Handle data with care and respect patient confidentiality.
  • Attend regular calls with South African and US team members to discuss updates and present findings.
  • Assist with data interpretation and review of conference materials or manuscripts related to research studies.
  • Other duties as reasonably requested by the Project Manager.

None EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Matric and higher education level, preferably a degree in Social/ Health Sciences
  • Fluent in English and Zulu (verbal and written)
  • Time management skills, basic administrative and organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines
  • Able to use a computer and/or table for data entry and writing of basic reports
  • Good interpersonal skills and strong service ethic
  • Sensitive to patients, professionalism, and attention to detail
  • Flexible to take on other duties as reasonably requested by the Project Manager.
  • Experience in a research setting is required.
  • Prior experience with HIV/sexual health is also required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Should have good written, oral, and interpersonal English communication skills. Knowledge and fluency in isiZulu is a must for this position. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret training materials and clinical/technical guidelines and protocols is required. COMPUTER SKILLS:
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office and internet.
  • Ability to use a computer for data entry and writing of basic reports.
  • Maintains a 95% accuracy with data entry.
OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Ability to plan, organize, and manage work independently.
  • Flexible and creative to come up with strategies to follow-up with and connect with patients.
  • Committed and willing to work under pressure.
