SIOC Development Trust (SIOC-CDT) was established in 2006 by Sishen Iron Ore Company SIOC (PTY) LTD to invest in the development of the communities in which the mine operates. Together with Anova, they are implementing a Mental Health Programme (Psychosocial Support) to reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention, treatment, promotion of mental health and wellbeing.

We are looking for a Psychiatrist to assist us on a consultant basis for 8 hours a week with the diagnosis, treatment and appropriate referral of people with mental disorders in the DoH Primary Healthcare setting in line with best practices that align with mental health legislation.

The Psychiatrist will be responsible for diagnosis, treatment and possible referral of people with mental disorders as prescribed by specific criteria outlined in the DSM-V, in the DoH primary healthcare setting. The role will involve roving between facilities in two Northern Cape Districts (John Taolo Gaetsewe District and Tantsabane local municipality) as well as tele-consultation with clients in the Limpopo (Thabazimbi Districts) supported by a mental health nurse on site.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Mental Health Assessments

  • Assess clients by conducting psychiatric evaluations including history and physical examination and observations.
  • Work as part of the multidisciplinary team to support clients at the primary healthcare facility including conducting regular case conferencing for clients.
Review and Recommend Treatment Interventions
  • Diagnose mental disorders as prescribed by specific criteria outlined in the DSM-V.
  • Develop treatment plans.
  • Prescribe recommended psychotherapeutic intervention and treatment.
  • Follow up clients as necessary including working closely with mental health nurse to provide continuous care for these clients.
  • Provide crisis interventions as and when required.
  • Facilitate client and family psychotherapeutic sessions.
  • Motivate and encourage adherence to recommended treatment.
Monitoring & Evaluation
  • Monitor the recommended treatment progress and change regimen as and when required, with the support of the mental health nurse.
  • Complete all necessary clinical documentation accurately and diligently.
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Collaborate with Project Mental Health nurses, Social Workers and other team members on all relevant mental health matters.
  • Coordinate and communicate with DoH mental health structures and other stakeholders, including those that are community-based, about treatment, care and linkage or referrals with the support of the social worker and mental health nurse.
Skills Development
  • Provide training and workshops to empower Anova staff and relevant stakeholders.
  • Mentor and coach Anova team to ensure compliance with the relevant legislations and SOPxe2x80x99s.
Administration & Reporting
  • Provide reports to the Project Manager.
  • Keep a record of all patients seen including project relevant information.
  • Compile and provide relevant reports monthly as well as provide ad hoc feedback on requests while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Support the facility to remain compliant with all relevant documentation.
  • Assist with the development of SOPxe2x80x99s.
Minimum qualifications and experience:
  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBChB)
  • Fellowship of the College of Psychiatrists of South Africa
  • Must be registered with the HPCSA as a specialist psychiatrist.
  • Familiar with South African legislation and Good Clinical practices.
  • 5 years experience working on a mental Health programme.
  • Experience in developing Standard Operating Procedures
  • Experience mentoring and coaching.
  • Knowledge of various psychotherapeutic interventions and treatments.
  • Excellent Administration and Report writing skills.
  • Knowledge of the key relevant stakeholders in mental health and referral centres.
  • Good communication, listening and observation skills.
  • Emotional capability to manage tough cases.
  • Analytical problem-solving skills
  • A comprehensive understanding and knowledge of physical and mental health
  • Empathy and a passion for helping people.
  • Team Player
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
