Data Analysts

Typical Degrees:

BSc/BCom in Statistics BSc in Data Science BSc in Computer Science BSc in Mathematics BCom in Information Systems or Quantitative Management
Beneficial Add-ons:

Honours or Postgrad Diploma in Data Science, Business Intelligence, or Analytics Certifications (e.g., Microsoft Power BI, SQL, Google Data Analytics)

Business Analysts

Typical Degrees:

BCom in Business Management, Information Systems, or Economics BSc in Computer Science or Industrial Engineering BBA or similar business/technology blend
Beneficial Add-ons:

Certifications like CBAP, CCBA (IIBA), or Agile BA certifications Postgraduate Diplomas in Business Analysis or Project Management

Economists

Typical Degrees:

BCom/BSc in Economics Honours or Master's in Economics (often preferred for advanced roles) Strong quantitative background often valued (Maths, Stats, Econometrics)

Financial Modellers

Typical Degrees:

BCom in Finance, Accounting, Investment Management, or Economics BSc in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, or Statistics

CFA certification (especially for investment/valuation roles) Financial Modelling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA) certification CA(SA) or CIMA for those with accounting backgrounds

Management Consultants

Typical Degrees:

BCom in Business Science, Strategy, Economics, or Finance BSc in Industrial Engineering or related technical fields MBA or postgraduate business qualification is highly valued
Versatility is key -- consultants often come from diverse academic backgrounds, including law, public policy, or engineering, as long as they have analytical and strategic capabilities.

Professional Engineers

Necessary Degrees:

BEng or BSc Eng in a relevant field (e.g., Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, Chemical) Must be from an ECSA-accredited university in South Africa
Additional Requirements:

ECSA registration as a Candidate Engineer or Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) Some may pursue PMP or Six Sigma certifications for project-heavy roles
