PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The successful incumbent will play pivotal role within project delivery and will be involved in process specification within a multi-disciplinary engineering throughout the project life cycle: project definition, project planning, project execution and project closure. The process engineer is a key interface between the CAPEX Team and Business Unit in ensuring that the project scope is clearly defined and will achieve the Business Unit objective.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERTISE:

  • Tertiary qualification in Chemical Engineering (BSc/BEng)
  • Registration with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) or eligible

JOB SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
  • 2 to 5 yearsxe2x80x99 relevant experience in the pulp & paper, petroleum, water, sugar, energy, mining or related industries.
  • 2 years minimum experience in a projects environment.
  • Must have an understanding of projects elements which includes scope, time, quality, costs, human resource, communication, risk and procurement management.
  • Must have an understanding of projects life cycles.
  • Knowledge and experience in engineering design process.
  • Knowledge and experience in process safety deliverables e.g. HAZOP studies and SIL Classification.
  • Developing and maintaining of systems to meet required specifications.
  • Must have an understanding of the design process and perform process engineering calculations e.g. hydraulic calculations, line sizing and pump sizing.
  • Must have an understanding of process control, applicable automation standards and process safety system related standards.
  • Must have a reasonable understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. of South Africa.
  • Compile design basis in line with overall project requirements.
  • Compile and perform related deliverables (for example, Flow Diagrams; P&IDs; Heat and Material Balances).

KEY PERFORMANCE AREA:
  • Development of selected process engineering solutions to appropriate level of detail for capital expenditure (capex) application.
  • Ensure control and management of key process deliverables i.e. P&IDs.
  • Actively involved with the identification and selection of suitable process engineering solutions for projects during the project planning phase.
  • Perform process engineering calculations.
  • Provide inputs to the preliminary engineering plans during the initiating phase of a project, and detailed engineering plans during the planning phase of a project from a process engineering point of view.
  • Accountable for implementation of process engineering solutions after capex approval. This will be done in conjunction with original equipment suppliers and external design consultants where necessary.
  • Co-ordination of process drawing and design work and ensuring proper approval of all related process drawings.
  • Ensuring that all relevant project documentation and drawings supplied by equipment suppliers / consultants are reviewed and approved.
  • Management and coordination of work conducted by external design consultants and suppliers.
  • Ensuring that relevant engineering processes and standards are applied.
  • Provide first line troubleshooting and problem solving expertise for process problems.
  • Resource management within the Process Discipline. Conducting performance reviews for staff personnel.
  • Ensuring Process Design Safety practices have been implemented for all projects.

  • Analytical skills for troubleshooting designs not working as planned, asking the right questions and finding answers that work.
  • Interpersonal skills in developing positive working relationships with other employees working with the Business Unit and CAPEX team.
  • Ability to communicate requirements clearly and effectively in verbal and written formats.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high pressure environment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills within a team environment.
