Job Description

To provide academic and professional leadership for Accounting and Business/Finance programmes in higher education. The incumbent is a subject matter expert who designs, develops, delivers, and quality assures programme content in alignment with national higher education regulations (CHE, SAQA, DHET) and relevant professional accounting body standards (SAICA, ACCA, CIMA). The role ensures graduates are academically competent, industry-relevant, and employable.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE



Minimum: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or equivalent. Preferred: Honours/Master's Degree in Accounting, Auditing, or Finance. Teaching and leadership experience in higher education. Knowledge of South African Higher Education regulatory framework (CHE, SAQA, DHET). Familiarity with professional body requirements (SAICA, ACCA, CIMA). Commitment to quality assurance and accreditation compliance. At least 8 years' experience in higher education, including 5 years as an Accounting lecturer. At least 3 years in curriculum design, assessment, and moderation. Experience in programme accreditation, quality assurance, and academic leadership.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES





The duties include the following:



Academic Leadership



Lead and oversee the academic integrity, quality, and relevance of Accounting programmes. Participate in programme reviews, curriculum renewal, and quality assurance processes. Promote applied and discipline-specific research in Accounting, Auditing, and Finance. Liaise with industry, commerce, and professional bodies to ensure programmes remain relevant. Participate in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement activities.



Academic Development



Design and develop Accounting curriculum aligned to SAQA outcomes and NQF level descriptors. Ensure alignment of programme content with CHE accreditation standards and DHET requirements. Develop programme and assessment policies, ensuring outcomes-based and competency-based learning. Prepare and manage submissions for CHE, SAQA, and DHET approvals. Chair programme and quality committees to maintain academic standards. Manage programme budgets for sustainability and cost-effectiveness. Deliver lectures, tutorials, and assessments for designated Accounting modules.



Programme Development and Quality Assurance



Monitor new programme rollout and gather faculty and student feedback. Oversee assessment design, moderation, and alignment with Bloom's taxonomy. Ensure integration of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) and employability skills in Accounting curricula. Incorporate digital accounting tools and data analytics competencies.



Student Records and Academic Monitoring



Oversee student registration, exemptions, and progression tracking. Maintain accurate academic records in compliance with institutional policy. Implement early identification and intervention for at-risk students. Supervise tests, examinations, and assessment moderation. Participate in examination boards and certification processes.



Teaching and Learning



Prepare, deliver, and assess Accounting modules using blended and online learning platforms. Mentor lecturers in accounting pedagogy and use of learning management systems. Develop academic staff capacity in teaching, assessment, and student support. Integrate academic support services, libraries, and digital resources. Promote research-led teaching practices and innovation in accounting education.



Student Leadership Development



Foster student leadership through mentorship, peer-learning initiatives, and involvement in academic societies. Encourage participation in accounting-related professional bodies and student chapters. Facilitate workshops and activities that build leadership, ethics, and professional responsibility. Support student-led projects, debates, and community engagement initiatives linked to accounting and finance. Guide students in developing soft skills such as teamwork, communication, and critical decision-making, essential for professional leadership in the workplace.



Student Support



Provide individual and group academic consultations. Conduct student performance reviews and implement remedial action. Facilitate academic literacy, numeracy, and accounting-specific tutorials. Support student employability and readiness for accounting professional pathways.



Lecturing



Deliver contact, distance, and online lectures in Accounting-related modules. Design formative and summative assessments in compliance with CHE/SAQA principles. Moderate assessments internally and externally. Review and update learning content to reflect industry and regulatory developments.
