Production Support Engineer (electronics)

Job Description

Together with our client, an electronic manufacturing company in Pretoria East we are recruiting for a Production Support Engineer to ensure all bill of materials are reviewed and loaded accurately on the system and to ensure that PCBs are ordered from the appropriate factories and that solder paste stencils used for manufacturing are correct and available. The Ideal Candidate needs to have 3 - 5 years of work experience in the production environment and hold a National Diploma, B-Tech and/or B-Eng Electronic Engineering.
Duties and Responsibilities
Administrative and General

  • Ensure that all the work done on a computer is backed up on the network.
  • Adhere to good housekeeping practices to maintain a controlled, efficient and pleasant working environment.
  • Ensure alertness to potential safety hazards in the working environment and in the equipment design.
PCB Quotations and Ordering
  • Generate BOMs (Bill Of Materials) in accordance with Omnigo standards and within the prescribed time.
  • Select appropriate PCB (Printed Circuit Board) supplier(s) based on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) complexity, technology used on PCB (Printed Circuit Board), import/export restrictions and specific client request.
  • Verify client data and supplement data when needed and appropriate to receive quotes.
  • Request additional data when the available data is insufficient to quote with.
  • Check if stencil(s) will be needed, what quantity of stencils and if the stencil has special requirements.
  • Generate the price for the stencil(s) based on stencil requirements.
  • Discuss special requirements with suppliers.
  • Order the PCBs (Printed Circuit Board) timeously.
  • Answer the general engineering queries and send the design specific engineering queries to the client to answer.
  • Log the engineering queries. Save the original and answer in the appropriate drives.
  • Verify PCB (Printed Circuit Board) panel where applicable.
  • Make adjustment to the panel where needed to optimize for Omnigo processes.
  • Request the panel paste files from suppliers where needed and not provided.
  • Engineer and order stencils timeously.
  • Sign off PCB (Printed Circuit Board) invoices to approve payment.
Support and Advisory
  • Investigate new panel designs to optimize specific production processes when requested.
  • Discuss special or unusual devices on PCBs (Printed Circuit Board) with SMT (Surface Mount Technology).
  • Make suggestions in production processes when an opportunity for improvement is discovered.
  • Investigate when stencil or PCB (Printed Circuit Board) related issues appear during production.
  • Help QA verify PCB (Printed Circuit Board) versions when it's unclear.
  • Advise QA on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) quality issues when asked.
  • Check PCBs (Printed Circuit Board) that are developed in house by the development technicians for general oversight and manufacturability.
  • Verify if alternate parts will fit on PCBs (Printed Circuit Board)
  • Obtain special resources from suppliers.
  • Extract information from Gerber data to help other departments.
  • Check stencils for damage before stencils are released to production.
  • Compile technical reports on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) designs to bring to light potential manufacturability difficulties.
  • Compile technical reports to highlight design issues or suggest optimizations.
  • Provide technical feedback on designs when clients request.
  • Advise when stock is over or under delivered for technical reasons.
  • Flag potential issues with PCBs (Printed Circuit Board) when discovered.
  • Production support including programming of equipment, e.g. AOI, PnP, Selective Solder etc. and also BOM (Bill Of Materials) creation and NPIs (New Product Introductions)
Supplier and Management
  • Maintain good supplier relations and know each supplier's technical capabilities.
  • Be aware of each supplier's strengths and weaknesses.
  • Be aware of client supplier's preferences and liaise with supplier when technical issues occur.
  • Decide whether to request replacements or credit notes when PCBs (Printed Circuit Board) are rejected.
  • Ensure stencils are checked timeously.
  • Notify the relevant personnel of urgent projects and assign priority when needed.
  • Continuously liaise with SMT (Surface Mount Technology). and production to improve stencil design guidelines and panel optimizations. Set up a system to store PCB (Printed Circuit Board) related data.
Skills and Competencies
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Dip, B-Tech and or B-Eng Electronic Engineering.
  • 3-5 Years work in the production environment.
  • Knowledge of IPC Standards.
