Gem Schoolwer based in Morningside, Durban is seeking a dedicated Product & Garment Specialist to take full ownership of a specific garment type within our school uniform range (e.g., skirts, golf shirts, blazers, t-shirts etc). This role combines technical garment expertise with product development responsibilities, ensuring that the assigned garment meets the highest standards of design, fit, durability, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as the subject matter expert for your assigned garment type.

Develop and maintain technical specifications, patterns, and fit standards for that garment.

Oversee fabric selection, trims, and manufacturing techniques to ensure quality and comfort.

Collaborate with design, sourcing, and production teams to create new styles and improve existing ones.

Conduct fit sessions, approve samples, and monitor production runs for consistency.

Implement and manage quality control processes for your garment category.

Stay updated on school uniform regulations, industry standards, and market trends relevant to your garment.

Analyze sales data and customer feedback to inform product improvements.

Train internal teams on garment features, care instructions, and technical details.

Ensure compliance with ethical sourcing and sustainability practices where applicable.

Qualifications

Diploma or degree in Fashion Design, Textile Technology, Garment Construction, or related field.

3-5 years of experience in apparel manufacturing, product development, or garment technology.

Strong knowledge of pattern making, fabric behavior, and garment construction techniques.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

High attention to detail and a passion for quality.

Preferred Skills

Patterns and pattern-making knowledge.

Familiarity with South African school uniform standards.

Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Job is full time - Monday to Friday and half day on Saturday
