Job Description

Purpose of Role





The Procurement Lead is accountable for managing and optimising the entire procurement lifecycle across the mining operation. This includes leadership of tactical procurement teams, oversight of MRP-based replenishment processes, and execution of complex sourcing strategies. The role operates at a high level of cross-functional and commercial complexity, ensuring material availability, contract integrity, supplier compliance, and cost control in support of uninterrupted mining operations. The incumbent plays a pivotal role in integrating procurement decisions with Production, Maintenance, Process, Mining and Engineering operations, with a strong focus on governance, local supplier development, and performance optimisation.


Role Context




Strategic Sourcing & Category Management




Develop and lead category sourcing strategies for key inputs (mechanical spares, electricals, services, consumables, CAPEX, etc.) aligned to operational and commercial priorities. Champion the implementation of the organization's Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) strategy in alignment with the Mining Charter III and BBBEE Act requirements. Drive long-term cost savings, localisation, and supply risk mitigation strategies. Lead cross-functional sourcing projects across Process, Engineering, Mining and Production. Oversee procurement planning in collaboration with engineering, production, and finance teams to meet operational requirements. Lead the execution of medium- to high-value tenders, including supplier negotiations, bid evaluations, and contracting.

Procurement Operations Supervision




Ensure adherence to procurement policies, procedures, and ethical standards. Supervise procurement staff responsible for purchasing, expediting, and order placement. Monitor procurement workload, turnaround times, backlog management, and requisition processing aligned with service levels. Escalate material unavailability risks and collaborate with MRP Lead and maintenance to resolve.

MRP Oversight and Systems Integration




Ensure optimal use of MRP tools within the ERP system (e.g., D365, Sage) to automate and streamline demand fulfilment. Validate that MRP settings (safety stock, reorder points, lead times) align with inventory policy. Work closely with materials planning and warehouse teams to reduce stockouts, OSMI and Excess Inventory. Master Data, governance and maintenance. Maintain procurement dashboards and KPI reporting for management review (e.g., cost savings, delivery performance, contract coverage).

Supplier Contracts and Governance




Lead the development, negotiation, implementation, and management of service level agreements (SLAs), fixed-term contracts, and framework agreements. Implement supplier relationship management (SRM) practices and conduct supplier audits, evaluations, and scorecards. Ensure contract alignment with technical specs, legal risk mitigation, and sustainability standards. Lead supplier performance reviews and implement corrective actions to address underperformance or risk.

Regulatory Compliance & BBBEE




Ensure full compliance with Mining Charter III, Preferential Procurement Regulations, and BBBEE scorecard KPI's. Promote and monitor local supplier participation, joint ventures, and enterprise development initiatives. Maintain audit readiness and support all external/internal reviews of procurement practices. Prepare and present Mining Charter Compliance Audit report to DMRE.

Stakeholder Engagement




Act as a key interface between Supply Chain and Operational teams (Mining, Engineering, Projects, Finance). Proactively resolve procurement-related delays impacting maintenance and production. Champion procurement integration during shutdowns, CAPEX projects, and underground expansions

Enterprise & Supplier Development (ESD)




Identify procurement opportunities for qualifying black-owned SMMEs and emerging suppliers, with a particular focus on host community development and local content promotion. Facilitate mentoring, technical support, preferential payment terms, and access-to-market initiatives for qualifying local suppliers. Monitor and report on ESD impact metrics, including spend with black-owned suppliers, SMMEs, and youth/women-owned businesses, to support continuous improvement and external audit compliance.

Vendor On-Boarding & Compliance




Lead the end-to-end vendor onboarding process in accordance with company policy, ensuring suppliers meet regulatory, commercial, and operational criteria before activation. Conduct due diligence checks including company registration, tax compliance (SARS), BBBEE certification, safety compliance (e.g., COIDA, ISO, MHSA etc.), and banking verification. Ensure all vendors are captured correctly in the ERP system with appropriate risk classifications, payment terms, and commodity mapping. Work collaboratively with 3rd party service providers to validate vendor credentials and capabilities. Maintain an up-to-date supplier master database and support periodic vendor requalification and compliance refresh activities. Monitor and enforce compliance to ethical sourcing standards, anti-bribery declarations, and the organisation's Code of Conduct for Suppliers.


Qualifications:




Grade 12 Degree in supply chain management or equivalent qualification. CIPS certification or equivalent (Advantageous)

Job specific experience:




Minimum 10 years of procurement experience, of which 5 years must be in a mining or heavy industrial environment. Experience leading procurement teams and managing high-value technical purchases and contracts. Sound understanding of materials planning, MRP, and supply planning processes in mining. Experience using ERP systems with MRP modules (Microsoft Dynamics 365 etc.)
