Job Description


The South African National Biodiversity Institute requires a motivated, professional, and responsible team player to provide effective, strategic leadership, management, and coordination for the implementation of the Detection, Evaluation and Eradication planning of emerging invasive species in all seven regions (Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, Limpopo, North West - Gauteng, Free State - Northern Cape, Mpumalanga).

This position requires a degree in Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. Postgraduate qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 8 years' experience in the relevant field, 4 years of which should be in the first line management position(s) working with partnerships, managing the implementation of biodiversity and environmental projects and communication with a range of stakeholders.

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: must have advanced knowledge and experience in working in the fields of Invasive Alien Species (IAS) and biota affected by Invasive Alien Species; knowledge of National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEMBA) and invasive alien species regulations; understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation; experience in project management, including budgeting, procurement, monitoring and evaluation.

The successful candidate must have the ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, analytical thinking, ability to work independently, and in a diverse team; advanced planning, organizing, negotiation skills, accuracy and attention to detail, strategic thinking, and ability to work with limited supervision are essential; excellent communication skills (both verbal and written); excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook). The possession of a valid driver's licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.

Key performance responsibilities include:

  • Manage the co-ordination and implementation of the Detection, Evaluation and Eradication Planning in all seven regions (Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, Limpopo, North West - Gauteng, Free State - Northern Cape, Mpumalanga);
  • Ensure compliance of the relevant Regions with Finance, Human Resources, Supply Chain Management, Corporate Services, and Administration policies and procedures;
  • Coordinate the contributions of the Regions to SANBI and donor reporting requirements; and
  • Manage human capital development and transformation in the biological invasions sector.
