The Centre for Mineral Biogeochemistry (CMBG) at the University of the Free State (UFS) is offering a Postdoctoral fellowship to an exceptional accomplished young and emerging researcher to conduct full-time research in biogeochemistry. The selected candidate will reflect the University's equity and diversity imperatives, including those for gender, racial/cultural and intellectual diversity.
The value of the fellowship is R250 000 per annum. The fellowship is renewable for a second year depending on satisfactory progress within UFS system as well as external evaluations.
Duties and responsibilities:

  • Contribute to research, development and roll out of technology in the biogeochemistry field, specifically in the areas of Environmental Geochemistry and/or Mine Rehabilitation.
  • Contribute to ongoing applied research and commercial projects.
  • Prepare the resulting research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Support and supervision of PhD, Master and Honours students where needed.
  • Author/co-author at least three (3) publication outputs per year in the form of DHET– accredited scholarly journal articles or books/chapters in books. The renewal of the fellowship beyond the first year depends on satisfactory performance and the submission of an annual progress report.
Eligibility Criteria:
  • The fellowship is open to South African and foreign nationals for full-time research at the University of the Free State, however preference will be given to South African citizens and applicants with permanent resident status.
  • The minimum requirement is a PhD in Biogeochemistry or related discipline graduated within the last 5 years.
  • Demonstrated experience in Environmental Geochemistry and/or Mine Rehabilitation is highly favoured.
  • Ability to write research reports and publications is required.
  • Good communication skills in English both spoken and written and motivation to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Good computer literacy.
  • The successful applicant will demonstrate exceptional academic performance and intellectual potential.
  • The fellowship is awarded on a competitive basis, taking into account the applicants' academic achievements, publication outputs and research potential.
  • The successful applicant will demonstrate potential to contribute to the creation of knowledge in their future academic career.
  • The successful applicant may not hold full-time salaried employment during the tenure of the award.
