Lead bioinformatics analyses and oversee data management for the DDD-Africa project
Work closely with project management members and students to advise on and refine analytical approaches
Location:
Division of Human Genetics, NHLS, Braamfontein, Johannesburg
Key performance areas:
Knowledge in bioinformatics relevant to genomics and NGS analysis to make appropriate decisions
Able to provide general bioinformatics solutions by identifying pipelines, data sources, and tools that can be used
Coordinate and assist in implementing the DDD-Africa data analysis plan
Work with PI to identify research funding opportunities relevant to the sustainability of the DDD-Africa project
Work with DDD-Africa PI to refine scientific plans (e.g., data to be collected, analysis to be done)
Plan data collection and analysis appropriate for funding proposals
Identify research needs and train students and staff appropriately
Assist PI with advice on informatics support required
Productive contribution to research publications emanating from the DDD-Africa dataset
Coordinate submission of research publications for peer review
Required minimum education and training:
PhD in Bioinformatics, Human Genetics, or related field
Required minimum work experience:
Completed PhD studies
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:
Strong background in bioinformatics, some exposure to human genetics and biomedical informatics (e.g., REDCap useful)
Good programming skills, with knowledge of Linux and workflows
Strong Python and R programming skills advantageous
Must be able to work independently, meet deadlines, and work in a team
The ability to write clearly and logically is highly desirable as is making oral presentations
Should have demonstrable ability to synthesize new ideas and self-learn
Must be able to work under pressure and to deadline with minimal supervision
