Postdoctoral Fellow in Anaerobic DigestionEmployer: Stellenbosch UniversityBackgroundAn opportunity is available for a Postdoctoral Fellowship specialising in bioprocess development, specifically anaerobic digestion (AD). The incumbent will deal with various aspects of the AD process, including an assessment of the methane potential of various organic waste feedstocks at bench scale with further optimisation at pilot scale. Innovative approaches to digest recalcitrant substrates and mixtures thereof will be a core focus. Publication of research results from within the research group will form a substantial part of the position.PositionCandidates with experience in AD systems, specifically experimental optimisation of conditions to enhance biomethane yield, as well as broader experience in biomass processing are encouraged to apply. A solid background in larger-scale AD operations as well as experience with the treatment of organic wastes and agro-processing wastes, as well as experience with complex substrates and microbial systems, will be considered an advantage. The incumbent should also exhibit strong writing skills with a track record of published works.The position will be integrated into the Bioresource Engineering group at the Department of Process Engineering and will involve hands-on experimental work as well as providing support to postgraduate experimental projects. The incumbent will also assist in service provision to several industry partners.The fellowship is available for a minimum period of six months with starting date of 1 Aug 2022. Extension of the position will depend on availability of funding. A monthly stipend of between ZAR33 000 and ZAR35 000 will be offered and will be tax-free provided the correct procedures are followed. The degree should have been obtained within the past five years.
