Job Description


Our client in the Telecommunications industry is currently looking for a Photovoltaic Design Engineer, in Randburg.

Responsibilities:

  • Calculations and design for PV systems xe2x80x93 mainly dealing with physical racking layouts (roof and ground), AC/DC electrical design, DC stringing, SANS compliance, fire, building code compliance, and project requirements.
  • Accurate BOM preparation of electrical and racking components.
  • Overseeing project execution from design phase to job completion.
  • Utilization of custom software tools to design PV ground mounted and roof top systems.
  • Perform accurate system sizing calculations.
  • Develop optimal designs with SLD (Solar Power System Single Line Diagram), conduit and wire scheduling, routing, and equipment plans.
  • Experience in developing electrical Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), reviewing equipment datasheets, doing electrical engineering calculations and specification of equipment.
  • Run production (PVWatts, PVSyst, etc.) (or similar) reports for system production estimates.
  • System specification, design and layout of PV plants for South African and EMEA market, using tools such Helioscope, PVSyst and AutoCAD or similar.
  • Completion of technical drawings (Use CAD office).
  • Technical support for proposal preparation.
  • Support component evaluation, specification and selection based on cost vs performance benefit.
  • Review contract technical requirements and prepare requirements tracking mechanism.
  • Ensure compliance with technical requirements and facilitate close out of open issues.
  • Experience in project management, project Bill of Quantities (BOQ) development, project scheduling and project workflow management.
  • Responsible for developing total project Bills of Quantities (BOQs), project quotes and proposals based onsite data obtained from client sites.
  • Responsible for managing interface between design/engineering team and project installation teams on projects in execution.
  • Providing technical advice and input to execution teams for technical issues and queries that come up on site.
  • Manage installation project budgets to ensure projects are executed on time, within budget and to a level of the necessary engineering quality prescribed.
  • Fulfilment of quality management role on projects in execution by conducting routine and ad-hoc inspections of completed project installations managing interfaces between procurement, stores, installers, in-house electricians, sub-contractors.
  • Responsible for project close-out documentation management and interface with end-client by generating and submitting final set of drawings on installation projects, signed electrical CoCs and approved municipal.
  • Pro-actively expand knowledge base in areas of Powerconnect Systems focus and coach in-house Powerconnect Systems Energy teams of electricians and technical teams.
  • Create electrical schematics, wire sizing, determine quantities, select components, and specify all components to provide the optimal configuration.
  • Create and review electrical schematics, cable calculations, determine quantities, select equipment and specify all components to provide the optimal configuration for Battery-Storage and Solar systems.
  • Technical support for tender preparation.
  • Technical support during construction/execution design.
  • Responsible for the integration of containerized batteries with battery inverter stations.
  • Support component evaluation, specification and selection based on cost vs. performance benefit.
  • Technical support for Request for Quotation preparation and offers evaluation.
  • Development into a highly seasoned Solar and Battery Storage professional with the support of the stakeholders.
  • Interface with internal stakeholders (project managers, project engineers, product engineers, procurement, sales team;) and external stakeholders to ensure consistent communication.

  • Support international projects remotely with design assessments and own expertise.
  • Execute designs that adhere to grid compliance and permitting requirements.
  • Coordinate with all the Sales teams within the company to develop complete proposal packages.
  • Work across functionally with sales, project management, and installation teams to ensure clientsxe2x80x99 needs and internal deadlines are met.
  • Proven Solar and battery system design and construction experience.
  • Experience in Solar PV and Energy Storage.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in understanding of electrical and electronic control circuits.
  • Experience in energy analytics & power system analytics.
  • Conformance with relevant Codes and Standards.
  • Contribute to market research, including identifying market potential and finding potential leads.
  • Manage current client portfolio and seeing where savings can be achieved.
  • Track monthly and yearly energy spend across the business client base to understand where there might be savings opportunities and present to clients.
  • Build and maintain long term relationships with new and existing customers through daily contact and frequent visits with relevant sales team.
  • Attend exhibitions/meetings to represent Powerconnect Systems and its products with solutions.
  • Collaborate with the technical support department and product specialists to address customer requirements and issues.
  • Support company service desk with issues until resolved.
  • Assist with marketing material.
  • Present and demonstrate the value of approved product and services to internal branches.
  • Assume responsibility for Vendor outputs and manage services against contracted scope.
  • Ensure strong internal and external client relationship is developed and maintained with the sales team of various branches.
  • Some weekend work required in case of emergencies as and when required.
  • Travelling required.
  • Interact professionally with cross-functional team members.
  • Must take accountability of own body of work, closing each project by design completion efficiently, while maintaining accuracy and strict attention to detail.
  • Retrospective site Audits ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Compiling said reports onsite or virtually.
  • xe2x80x8bxe2x80x8bxe2x80x8bxe2x80x8bRetrospective COC site audits.

  • Report to the Employer office daily, but able to attend and be stationed at site meetings/project sites when necessary.
  • Be involved in company research and design initiatives and provide input to senior management for consideration.
  • Be involved in company initiatives to optimise company processes and systems and provide input when required.
  • Contribute and develop systems and processes in areas of experience and increase knowledgebase of the company.
  • Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental Responsibilities:
  • Report any deviations that could lead to an accident.
  • Participate in Safety Training to improve safety standards.
  • Report incidents and accidents before the end of a shift.
  • Ensure that the SHEQ Management System requirements are met towards customer, internal, ISO, regulatory/legal requirements.
  • Manage and perform all internal processes, especially those that affect the quality of the Organization's products.
  • Work with Customers, Colleagues and Contractors towards continual improvement of the Management system and report the need for improvement to Management.
  • Keep up standards and regulations with respect to Products and Services.
  • Any other reasonable duties and responsibilities in line with capabilities and at the request of the Superior.
Requirements:
  • Qualified Red Seal Electrician.
  • Qualified Wireman.
  • National Diploma Electrical Engineering N1 to N6 or Bachelorxe2x80x99s Degree in Electrical Engineering or BTech Electrical Engineering.
  • Current registration with Department of Labour.
  • Current registration with ECSA.
  • PV Design Certification or equivalent (PV green card or equivalent).
  • Working knowledge of SANS and safety code is crucial.
  • Basic understanding of construction techniques and project management practices.
  • Current Driverxe2x80x99s licence.
  • Have a minimum of 4-5 years solar PV and battery storage design, project design, team management, engineering and project execution in the following technologies: residential and commercial solar PV, solar panel roof mounting, lithium-ion battery storage, LV AC and DC electrical DB board reticulation and home automation integration.
  • 4 Minimum years of experience in solar PV system design, residential, financial, commercial, industrial, mining and retail construction background.
  • Minimum 4 yearsxe2x80x99 experience in battery-storage and/or solar systems design.
  • Strong understanding of battery-storage and solar (Photovoltaic) power systems.
  • Experience with on-site troubleshooting of technology and automation of manual processes.
  • Excellent working knowledge of SANS.
  • Qualified Red Seal Electrical.
  • Qualified Wireman.
  • AutoCAD and related Autodesk software advantageous.
  • Must be proficient in PV Design Software and related solar performance modelling software.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills.
  • Good problem solving and critical thinking abilities and a proactive work ethic.
  • Willingness and ability to clearly define objectives, exercise sound technical judgment, take on increasing levels of responsibility and to thrive in a small, flexible, and dynamic work environment.
  • Strong ability to apply innovative and creative skills to problem solving.
  • Tertiary level qualification in Electrical Engineering mandatory (B.Sc. Engineering or B.Tech. Engineering or B Engineering xe2x80x93 Electrical).
  • Good oral and written communication skills mandatory.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office mandatory e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
  • Previous renewable energy and/or electrical distribution work experience mandatory.
  • Reporting structure xe2x80x93 Position will report to the Managing Executive.
  • Weekly and monthly reporting will be required.
  • Must be able to work well independently as well as within company teams to execute projects successfully.
  • Work well independently and in project teams.
  • Must be driven to perform, willing to take on responsibility and able to make decisions independently.
  • Able to participate in structured and un-structured learning and training when they come up from time to time.

Remuneration:
  • R20 000 xe2x80x93 R25 000 per month + medical aid and pension fund.
