This purpose of the Patent Candidate Attorney role is to ensure the firm can deliver technically robust and legally sound patent services, strengthen client trust and protect innovations.





The position forms a pivotal part in supporting our patent practice, focusing on the patenting of chemical engineering, process engineering, and chemical technologies. This position is ideal for candidates with a strong technical foundation who are transitioning into the legal profession, combining scientific expertise with developing legal skills, with a very strong emphasis on persuasive writing and language skills, to help clients safeguard their innovations.




KEY SKILLS & COMPETENCIES




Ability to interpret complex engineering and scientific concepts and translate them into clear, legally sound patent documentation Excellent English writing and speaking skills, including an ability to write in a structured, persuasive manner to convey legal concepts and arguments Strong communication skills for engaging with and advising clients Professional interpersonal skills to engage with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and technical fields. Skilled in conducting searches, analysing technical literature critically, and assessing technical differences between existing and fresh technologies and the value of technical differences Precision in reviewing and drawing up technical and legal documents and ensuring compliance with legal frameworks and accuracy requirements Ability to manage multiple deadlines and expectations, while delivering timeous outcomes, in a high-pressure environment across different client portfolios, in circumstances in which there are regularly competing time demands internally and externally Strong foundation in the principles of chemical engineering, process engineering, minerals processing, chemical processes, and/or materials science Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required, including attention to detail from formatting perspectives Developing understanding of intellectual property law, patent prosecution procedures, and regulatory frameworks Critical analytical thinking in identifying potential legal risks and proactively showing accountability and drive Self-drive in actively seeking opportunities to expand knowledge and skills both internally and externally, staying current with industry and role-specific developments Shows initiative and responsibility in managing workload, with a self-motivated approach to learning


Skills and knowledge




Assist in drafting and filing patent applications, particularly in chemical and process engineering fields Conduct searches and analyse technical documents Support attorneys in responding to patent office communications and examiner reports Translate complex technical concepts into clear, legally compliant language for patent specifications Maintain accurate records of filings, deadlines, and client communications Collaborate with senior attorneys to develop IP strategies aligned with client business objectives Stay updated on developments in patent law, chemical and process engineering innovations, and industry trends Participate in client meetings, providing technical insights and supporting legal discussions Attend to review and revision of South African patent applications originating from abroad and associated administration

Qualification/s




Four-year BEng qualification (Chemical or Process Engineering) or a master's or doctorate level qualification in chemistry * In possession of or currently enrolled in LLB Degree
