Job Purpose
This position is intended to assist the department in achieving its academic objectives, which include teaching in accordance with a predetermined curriculum, conducting research and innovation, participating in community engagement and teaching practice activities, as well as developing and designing curricula. The successful candidate will teach in one or more of the following areas of specialisation:


English Travel and Tourism Natural Sciences Life Orientation Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises Community and Adult Education & Training Management

In the Advanced Diploma in Adult and Community Education and Training with expertise in adult community education and training in the Department of Teacher Professional Development at the Mowbray Campus.




Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
A relevant Master's degree A relevant teaching qualification One or more of the above-indicated areas of specialisation as a major subject at the undergraduate level Two (2) years relevant lecturing experience in at tertiary level or five (5) years' relevant teaching experience at school level. Experience teaching or facilitating learning within Adult and Community Education or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) contexts.

Recommendations:




Experience in developing course curricula in their area of specialisation for community-based teaching initiatives. Demonstrated ability to apply adult learning theories (e.g. andragogy, transformative or experiential learning) in course facilitation. Proven experience in curriculum design and alignment with national policy frameworks (e.g. White Paper on PSET, National Qualifications Framework, CET College mandate). Prior involvement in Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) coordination, supervision, or mentorship. Familiarity with community development, lifelong learning, or non-formal education programmes. Experience in assessment design, including both formative and summative assessment strategies. Capacity to facilitate both online and blended learning using digital learning management systems (e.g. Blackboard). Evidence of collaborative engagement with NGOs, NPOs, or community organisations in an educational capacity. A commitment to social justice, inclusivity, and contextualised education in diverse learning environments. Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

1. Teaching and Learning




Facilitate high-quality learning and assessment in modules within the Department of Teacher Professional Development, with a specific focus on Adult and Community Education and Training. Develop and deliver engaging learning experiences using appropriate pedagogical approaches and inclusive facilitation methods. Contribute to the development, review, and enhancement of module curricula, learning materials, and assessment instruments. Implement institutional policies and procedures for assessment, moderation, and quality assurance. Incorporate hybrid and digital learning models in alignment with the programme's blended delivery approach

2. Student Support and Mentorship






Provide academic guidance, supervision, and mentorship to students throughout their studies, including during Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) placements. Offer constructive feedback and support that promotes academic growth, professional competence, and reflective practice. Foster a learning environment that values respect, diversity, and learner-centred engagement.

3. Research and Scholarly Engagement




Participate in scholarly and professional development activities that advance teaching practice, curriculum innovation, and the field of Adult and Community Education. Contribute to the dissemination of knowledge through research, conference participation, or publication where feasible. Engage in collaborative research or academic initiatives aligned with departmental and institutional priorities.

4. Community Engagement and Partnerships




Contribute to community engagement projects that strengthen links between the university, CET Colleges, NGOs, and other adult learning providers. Support and maintain partnerships with community learning centres and relevant organisations to enhance WIL opportunities and community responsiveness.

5. Academic Administration and Professional Conduct




Undertake administrative responsibilities related to teaching, assessment, moderation, and student progress reporting. Uphold institutional values of professionalism, integrity, and accountability in all academic activities. Contribute actively to departmental meetings, planning sessions, and team initiatives. Manage workload effectively and meet established deadlines for all teaching and administrative responsibilities. Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Department or Programme Coordinator in support of departmental objectives.

Expert knowledge in one or more of the previously indicated areas of specialisation with proven ability to contextualise learning for adult and community education settings. Demonstrated pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and ability to apply adult learning principles (e.g. andragogy, experiential learning, transformative learning). Excellent teaching and facilitation skills, adaptable to diverse learner profiles and inclusive educational environments. Capacity for curriculum design and development of learning materials aligned with community-based and hybrid learning contexts. Assessment and quality assurance competence, including design, moderation, and feedback processes consistent with institutional policies. Proven ability to mentor and support students through academic, professional, and Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) processes. Commitment to student-centred learning and to fostering a supportive, reflective classroom culture. Willingness to mentor emerging staff and contribute to a culture of professional growth and collaboration. Engagement in research and scholarly activities, including publication, conference participation, or postgraduate supervision. Ability to link research to teaching innovation, community education, and policy practice. Active involvement in community engagement aligned with the ACET mandate and partnerships with CET Colleges, NGOs, or community learning centres. Ability to network with schools, colleges, and other community organisations to support WIL placements and programme visibility. Strong teamwork and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary academic team. Adaptable and innovative, able to align with evolving teaching technologies and institutional systems. High level of computer literacy and digital pedagogy skills, with proficiency in hybrid and online teaching platforms (e.g., Blackboard, MS Teams). Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and accountability in academic and administrative duties. Meticulous planning, organisational, and time-management skills, ensuring deadlines and deliverables are met. Excellent presentation and communication skills, both written and verbal. Commitment to the values of inclusivity, lifelong learning, and social responsiveness central to Adult and Community Education.
