Venetia Mine (VM) was an open pit diamond mine located approximately 80 kilometres west of Musina in the Limpopo Province. It is the largest producer of diamonds in South Africa and will attain a depth of 450m at the end of Cut 4 (circa 2022).

The objective of the Venetia Underground Project (VUP), a brownfields project, is the systematic expansion of the life of the existing VOP by developing underground access to two kimberlitic pipes, K01 and K02, which will create continued shareholder value into the future. The VUP will lengthen the economic life of VM from 2022 (when it is scheduled to complete open pit mining operations and underground ore extraction operations will start to ramp up) to 2045. The ore processing and other physical infrastructure currently in place at VM will remain largely unchanged by the transition from open pit to underground mining while additional infrastructure to support the underground mining operations will be constructed by the VUP in the period 2013 to 2022.

The key mandate of the Operational Readiness & Transition Team (OR&T) is the planning and successful execution of the integration and transition of the open pit to an underground operation with no production hiatus or loss of revenue.



The Engineer: OR&T is required to manage and lead the implementation of the AS&R framework and engineering elements of the OR&T Master Schedule supporting the transition from open pit to underground operations.

• He / she is responsible to support and facilitate the acquisition and integration of all engineering elements of the OR&T including the following;
• Be a proactive member of the ORT team, supporting deliverables and contributing to the success of the project(s) with knowledge and quality assurance attributes to strengthen the outcome.
• Support staff competence and capabilities development
• Provide oversight of the handover of project documentation including drawings, equipment manuals, training manuals, equipment warranty register.
• Work with project engineers, engineering contractors, asset management to deliver Operational Readiness framework as per plans and schedule
• Continuous improvement and asset optimisation initiatives for engineering processes.
• Development and implementation of maintenance tactics for new assets
• Development of new standard operating procedures including the required safety related documentation such as JRAs, SOPs, SWPs, isolation plans, lift plans
• Ensure operations and maintenance input into Design (P&ID, PFD, HAZOP, Model Reviews, Maintainability)
• Provide coordination for operational input into operability and maintainability studies
• Coordination of developing spares strategies
• Coordination and liaison in developing of asset strategies
• Coordinate design reviews for maintainability
• Support the collaborative working environment and ensure all operational aspects of assets, and related support systems are evaluated and embedded into operational philosophies/strategies
• Ensure manual guidelines are fully complied with for all new assets, issues and interfaces are discussed and agreed with, operations & S&SD requirements are addressed early, relevant training requirements are identified and provided
• Assist the site engineering maintenance team to develop OPEX and project budgets.

This role is in the Operational Readiness &Transition at a GBF6 level reporting to the Operational Readiness & Transition Manager. Please note this role is based in Venetia Mine Musina/Johannesburg.

Qualifications

Education required:

• Grade 12 (essential)
• Degree/B Tech in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or any other Asset Management related qualification

Experience & knowledge required:

• Minimum 5 years' experience on operating mines and/ or in a project environment as an engineer
• Minimum 2 years UG knowledge and experience (preferable)
• Project management and operational experience
• Construction engineering knowledge is essential - (HAZOPS, Constructability etc.)
• Contractor Management experience.
• Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) (advantageous)

Other requirements:

• Effective communication skills in English (written and verbal)
• Valid EB/Code 08 Drivers License
• Successfully obtain a Red Ticket (Medical Fitness certificate) and Security clearance on mine

Technical Skills

• Advanced knowledge of technical risk and maintenance management
• Advanced understanding of the application and implementation of mining, safety and environmental legislation
• Solid technical and operational knowledge in the business processes associated with underground mining operations and experience of constructing and operating such mines
• A methodical approach, good analytical skills, accuracy and attention to detail.
• Project engineering, construction and management experience
• Sound business and financial acumen
