They operate on a large-scale copper and cobalt deposits, both open pit and underground, with high-grade mineral reserves. The Role
This position reports to the Operational Readiness Manager and is responsible for leading the development and implementation of a comprehensive Operational Readiness Plan (ORP), ensuring projects transition smoothly from design phases to full operational status.
This is a permanent position, based in Johannesburg South Africa, with regular travel to the DRC. Responsibilities
Main Objective of the position:

  • Evaluate the current operational landscape, pinpointing areas of concern and identifying gaps that could hinder seamless transitions or optimal functioning.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive Operational Readiness Plan (ORP), ensuring projects transition smoothly from design phases to full operational status.
  • Harness insights from HAZOPs, FMECAs & ERP tools, integrating them into the ORP to identify & mitigate potential operational risks.
  • Drive cross-departmental collaboration in shaping and refining the ORP, promoting alignment and consistent handover practices across the organization.
  • Engage stakeholders, fostering continuous improvement and adaptability within the ORP to meet evolving needs.
  • Prioritize safety, efficiency, and risk management in all facets of the handover process, establishing a gold standard for operational excellence.
Operational Assessment:
  • Evaluate the existing operational landscape to pinpoint areas of concern.
  • Identify gaps in processes that could challenge seamless transitions.
  • Offer strategic recommendations based on assessments to optimize operations.
OR Development & Implementation:
  • Lead the crafting and rollout of a comprehensive Operational Readiness Plan.
  • Ensure smooth transitioning of projects from conceptualization to operations phases.
  • Continuously monitor and refine the ORP to suit evolving project requirements.
Maintenance Expertise:
  • Utilize extensive maintenance knowledge to advise operational teams on equipment upkeep, predictive maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Continuously refine maintenance strategies, procedures, tactics and schedules, and work with maintenance teams to ensure optimal equipment condition.
  • Seamlessly integrate the asset management system with established maintenance processes, ensuring holistic operational synergy.
ERP System Collaboration:
  • Collaborate closely with ERP tools to derive actionable insights (e.g., HMI and SCADA functionality testing for plant start up).
  • Reinforce the ORP with real-time data, streamlining operational processes.
  • Maintain an open channel with ERP specialists for system updates and feedback.
Collaborative Training & Development:
  • Partner with teams across departments to co-create tailored training programs enhancing operational readiness.
  • Engage with staff to understand their training needs, ensuring a feedback-driven approach to learning initiatives.
  • Collaborate with HR and department leads to develop resourcing plans and labor models, ensuring alignment with operational demands and growth.
Risk Management Integration:
  • Integrate insights from HAZOPs and FMECAs to inform proactive risk management.
  • Address potential operational challenges through pre-emptive strategies.
  • Foster an environment that prioritizes risk assessment at every operational stage.
Commissioning Support:
  • Support the commissioning, ensuring rigorous system testing and validation.
  • Ensure readiness for full-scale operations, dovetailing with the ORP.
  • Collaborate with project and engineering teams to resolve commissioning challenges.
Cross-departmental Engagement:
  • Champion inter-departmental collaboration for ORP objectives alignment.
  • Instil consistent handover practices across all departments.
  • Coordinate between departments to address concerns & enhance cooperative efforts.
Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Regularly consult with key stakeholders to ensure organizational goal alignment.
  • Cultivate a feedback-driven environment for continuous ORP improvement.
  • Organize periodic meetings to keep stakeholders informed & gather feedback.
Safety & Efficiency Leadership:
  • Set & uphold the highest standards of safety throughout the transition process.
  • Emphasize operational efficiency, benchmarking against industry best practices.
  • Implement regular safety audits to maintain organizational excellence.
The Requirements
  • Bachelorxe2x80x99s degree in engineering, operations management, or related field. Advanced degrees are a plus.
  • Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in an operational role with a significant focus on asset management, ERP systems, and commissioning.
  • Deep understanding of maintenance methodologies, ERP solutions (SAP, Oracle, etc.), and modern asset management strategies.
  • Solid background in conducting HAZOPs and FMECAs with a proven track record of implementing their findings in operations.
  • Familiarity with the commissioning process, from equipment testing to handover to operations.
  • Excellent team collaboration, communication, and project management capabilities.
