Job Description

:
A well-established children-focused NGO is looking for a Chief Operating Officer who will work in close collaboration with the CEO and the Executive Committee team to design, implement, and manage operational strategies that align with their mission, objectives, and long-term vision.
This role requires a strategic and highly organised leader with at least 5 years of programme management experience, preferably within the healthcare sector, and ideally with a medical background. The COO will oversee all operational, financial, and stakeholder engagement aspects.
Responsibilities:
Coordinate all surgical programmes nationally, including scheduling and logistics at partner hospitals.
Secure and liaise with surgical teams, including anesthetists, nurses, and agency staff, ensuring theatre and ward coverage.
Oversee patient identification and preparation, including pre-operative counselling for patients and caregivers.
Manage all administrative arrangements and ensure funding covers:

  • Pre- and post-operative therapies (psychological, speech, occupational, and physiotherapy)
  • Skills transfer and training for public sector medical professionals
  • Surgical consumables and additional medical equipment as needed
  • Caregiver accommodation, meals, transport, and travel
Lead donor reporting and budget management, including the creation and maintenance of detailed programme budgets in Microsoft Excel.
Track expenses, manage cost allocations, and ensure timely and accurate reporting to funders.
Serve as the primary liaison between hospitals, patients, media, and donors.
Oversee all PR and marketing elements related to programme implementation.
Ensure compliance with reporting requirements and uphold the highest standards of patient care, safety, and dignity.
Requirements
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in programme management, preferably within a healthcare, NGO, or public health setting.
  • Medical or allied health background strongly preferred.
  • Strong financial acumen, with demonstrated ability to manage and track budgets in Excel and compile comprehensive donor reports.
  • Proven ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships and multiple project timelines.
  • Willingness to travel regularly across South Africa.
