CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
To contribute to the development and delivery of academic programmes in Maritime Economics and Management in the NMU Business School. Participate in academic and industry engagements, conduct and publish research, and commit to completing own doctoral studies and contribute to administrative duties in the Business School.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • The post is a permanent appointment based in the NMU Business School, pursuant to the implementation of the South African Department of Higher Education and Trainings New Generation of Academic programmes (nGAP).
  • nGAP scholars have a reduced teaching and administrative workload in the first three years of appointment to facilitate completion of doctoral studies and competency development.
  • Teaching and learning:
  • Facilitate learning at postgraduate level in Maritime Economics and Management and related disciplines
  • Use basic teaching and assessment practices, participate in quality review processes to promote high quality teaching and learning and participate in design of modules and materials.
  • Research:
  • Engage in major research project (e.g., doctorate) or part of a research team.
  • Subsequent to complete doctoral studies, produce peer reviewed publication (e.g., articles, books, chapters) of quality, present research papers at national academic and professional conferences and supervise of co-supervise MBA student research
  • Engagement and administration:
  • Active participation in departmental meetings and committees
  • Participate in industry, NGO and external stakeholder engagements, including consulting and relevant activities tailored to the needs to the external community (incl. SLPs, seminars, CPD workshop) and contributing to economic, social and cultural development
CORE COMPETENCIES
  • Relevant discipline knowledge in Maritime Economics and Management or related discipline (e.g. supply chain management, logistics management and management in maritime business)
  • Potential to reach at relevant MBA level (e.g., experience at facilitating learning at undergraduate and postgraduate or adult education level)
  • Relevant business and industry experience, including consulting if possible
  • Potential to contribute to knowledge creation through research and publishing in journal accredited by DHET and to supervise masters candidates (e.g., prior publications or masters research)
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Good networking skills
REQUIREMENTS
  • Relevant masters qualification with a minimum average of 70% pass mark for the masters degree
  • Two years relevant and/or related experience (lecturing / business / consulting experience) in Maritime Economics and Management or a related discipline
  • Lecturing and / or industry experience will be an added advantage
  • Any supervision experience at a postgraduate level will be an added advantage
  • Commit to completing own doctoral studies/research
