Overview
A leading South African food franchise is seeking a New Product Developer to join its fast-paced, creative Innovation team. This hands-on, cross-functional role is ideal for someone passionate about food, innovation, and delivering exceptional customer experiences. The role spans Head Office, Corporate Stores, Innovation Labs, Concept Stores, and Central Kitchen environments.
Purpose of the Role
To support and manage the full New Product Development (NPD) cycle--from ideation and testing through to recipe formulation, feedback loops, and national launch. The role contributes to product quality, diversification, and commercial growth through innovation.
The role also includes participation in sister brand and dark kitchen concept projects, support for operational and customer service queries, and translating emerging trends into commercially viable menu items.
Key Responsibilities
Innovation & Concept Development
Conduct idea generation sessions and identify market trends and gaps.
Contribute to innovation across internal brands and concept kitchens.
Assist with concept development while considering operational, packaging, and delivery constraints.
Test new ingredients or processes to reduce cost, improve quality, and minimize waste.
Testing & Feedback
Conduct internal tastings and support marketing with competitor analysis.
Use structured consumer feedback from focus groups and Innovation Labs.
Run iterative improvement cycles using digital tools and store-level feedback.
Project Management & Process Execution
Execute the formal NPD process including idea screening, feasibility, costing, and launch prep.
Maintain documentation of nutritional analysis, training materials, and readiness for rollout.
Use digital project tools (e.g., Monday.com) to manage product databases and logs.
Market Research & Brand Alignment
Collaborate with Marketing and Insights teams for trend analyses and audits.
Provide feedback to Operations, Training, and Customer Service teams.
Launch & Go-to-Market
Prepare launch materials such as training guides, costings, styling inputs, and internal comms.
Support training and implementation at the store level during new product rollouts.
Candidate Profile
Minimum Qualifications
Degree/Diploma in Food Science, Culinary Arts, Consumer Science, or related field.
Experience in product development or food innovation (QSR/FMCG preferred).
Knowledge of nutrition, costing, food safety, and quality standards.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital project management platforms.

Working Conditions

Flexibility: Extended hours and weekend work may be required during key phases.
Tools: Monday.com, Microsoft Office, digital collaboration/testing tools.
