This Mid-Level Reporter role is instrumental in driving significant content by producing compelling stories across multiple formats, integrating data insights, actively contributing to the development of our junior journalistic talent, and upholding Daily Maverick's core values of truth, accuracy, and transparency.



We're looking for a skilled and committed Journalist with a particular interest in reporting on issues affecting Johannesburg. This role is ideal for a reporter with newsroom experience, a strong sense of public interest, and the ability to cover a range of issues with accuracy, depth, and balance.

Minimum Requirements

At least 5 years of writing and reporting experience. Proven interviewing techniques and proven information gathering abilities. A proven eye for detail that is reflected in the narrative and context of different forms of storytelling. Strong adherence to journalistic ethics, including principles of truth, accuracy, transparency, critical thinking, and independence. Proven digital literacy, including familiarity with CMS, Google Workspace, Slack, and social media for news alerts. Demonstrable track record of adhering to deadlines and following instructions, with a commitment to fact-based reporting and differentiating between disinformation and truth.

Duties and Responsibilities

Cover a variety of beats including education, politics, service delivery, local governance, business, the environment, and social issues. Find and tell stories that drive understanding, spark debate, or offer fresh perspectives on life in Johannesburg. Seek out stories of resilience, innovation, and hope that help reflect the full complexity of the region. Pitch and develop original ideas that resonate with local audiences and beyond. Follow breaking news and produce accurate, engaging, and timely reporting. Build and maintain a solid network of sources across sectors. Work closely with editors and fellow reporters to shape stories for clarity and impact. * Uphold ethical and legal standards in all reporting.
