Mid-level Journalist - Join the Daily Maverick Team in Nelson Mandela Bay

We're looking for a skilled and committed Journalist with a particular interest in politics and council reporting to join our team in Nelson Mandela Bay. This role is ideal for a reporter with newsroom experience, a strong sense of public interest, and the ability to cover a range of issues with accuracy, depth, and balance.

Minimum Requirements

At least five years of journalism experience, preferably with some focus on education or business;

Existing network of sources in Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape particularly council and political contacts.

Journalism/tertiary qualification or equivalent experience;

Driver's licence and willingness to travel within the province and country;

Exceptional news sense and editorial judgement;

Exceptional writing skills and attention to detail;

Photographic/visual/multimedia skills are an advantage;

Impeccable general knowledge and curiosity about the world;

Ability to work virtually and meet deadlines;

Proven ability to pitch and produce the majority of their own stories (around 70%-80% of monthly output);*


Track record of accountability reporting, including holding officials and institutions to account.

Duties and Responsibilities

Cover a variety of beats including education, politics, service delivery, local governance, business, the environment, and social issues. Find and tell stories that drive understanding, spark debate, or offer fresh perspectives on life in the metro. Seek out stories of resilience, innovation, and hope that help reflect the full complexity of the region. Pitch and develop original ideas that resonate with local audiences and beyond. Follow breaking news and produce accurate, engaging, and timely reporting. Build and maintain a solid network of sources across sectors. Work closely with editors and fellow reporters to shape stories for clarity and impact. * Uphold ethical and legal standards in all reporting.
