Position Title

Metallurgical/Chemical Engineering Professional

Empangeni, KZN, South Africa

Position Overview

This position is earmarked for technical support to the operational metallurgical plants. Identification of improvement opportunities, management of projects and initiatives to improve the performance of the metallurgical plants. Specific technology areas of importance include ilmenite smelting, metal processing and minerals beneficiation (gravity concentration, magnetic and electrostatic separation, size classification and thickening technology for water recovery among other).

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

Process Efficiency
  • Conduct work in accordance with set strategies, plans and production targets.
  • Ensure the optimal use of available resources, both people and equipment.
  • Assume responsibility for Equipment selection, Metallurgical process design, Project management and associated financial metrics for project evaluation and implementation.
Safe and Healthy Work environment
  • Ensure and maintain a healthy environment, safe operations, and practices.
  • Comply with SHEC and technical requirements, in line with Plant / Mine targets.
  • Ensure process safety management aspects are incorporated during project development.
  • Facilitate Hazard and Operability Studies as part of new project development.
  • Facilitate process incident investigations.
  • Oversee the technical development and coaching of Engineers and Technicians-in-Training.
Continuous Improvement
  • Initiate continuous improvement initiatives leading to cost saving opportunities whilst keeping abreast of new developments within the specialist field.
  • Conduct research work required to initiate process changes.
  • Conduct and facilitate root cause failure analysis as well as problem solving investigation to identify changes required to address production deviations and equipment failures.
  • Conduct desktop and pre-feasibility studies toward improving process flow and efficiency.
Customer and Client Relationship Management
  • Liaise with internal and external customers to ensure the Tronox product quality aligns with customer requirements.
  • Ensure the Tronox image is maintained and always promoted (internally and externally).
  • Provide a professional / specialist advisory support service regarding production / product quality across different levels within the organization.
  • Investigate product quality deviations from agreed specifications as well as complaints from customers and report findings to executive management.
Project Management
  • Evaluate and complete projects with minimum risk, within allocated timeframes and according to specified budgetary requirements.
  • Manage projects regarding processes, technology, and equipment.
  • Fulfill project manager roll for concept and pre-feasibility phases of site projects.
  • Ensure operational readiness aspects are addressed and in place prior to commissioning new projects.
  • Manage a project portfolio, updating project forecasts in terms of timeline, budget, and progress regularly.
  • Manage design consultants to ensure project design aligns and addresses project goals and business needs.
  • Engage with operational personnel and engineering colleagues to ensure all engineering disciplines and operational requirements are considered in design and planning for improvement projects.
Skills and Qualifications

A candidate that we would love would be:
  • B Eng. Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering
  • NQF Level 7 (Mandatory)
  • B Eng. Hons NQF Level 8 (Recommended)
  • Driverxe2x80x99s License (Mandatory)
  • 6 - 8 yearsxe2x80x99 Extractive metallurgical experience / Plant exposure to pyro-metallurgical and/or minerals beneficiation processes/Operating within a Heavy Industry environment (Mandatory)
  • Computer Literacy (Mandatory)
