The purpose of the role is to oversee and coordinate the efficient and continuous operation of the sand plant, cullet sorting system, batch plant, and furnace. The role ensures optimal glass melting and bottle production while maintaining safety, quality, and production target.
Key Performance Areas:
Operations
Lead all batch and furnace operations, including raw material handling, mixing, and delivery to the furnace.
Manage furnace performance, including temperature control, combustion systems, & efficiency.
Ensure compliance with environmental and food safety standards.
Lead and develop a team of technicians and operators.
Monitor and analyze furnace data to optimize glass quality and energy efficiency.
Coordinate furnace rebuilds, repairs, and preventive maintenance activities.
Manage inventory and procurement of raw materials, refractories, and consumables.
Collaborate with Production, Quality, and Engineering teams to align operational goals.
Develop and implement SOPs, training programs, and safety protocols.
Conduct inspections and audits of equipment and processes.
Strategic Management
Provide input to strategic plans of the section.
Compile comprehensive operational plans in line with strategy, quarterly and annual reports.
Keep abreast with changes in relevant guidelines and other legislation, to make recommendations where policies and procedures need to be amended.
Develop, enhance and implement policies, processes and procedures that are relevant to the section and enhance service delivery.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to implement new systems and processes, enabling integration to other areas.
Provide input into the development of departmental annual financial plans.
Monitor departmental expenditure against budget allocations and request reallocation as required.
Approve and sign off invoice & approve, requisitions, etc. for expenditure, within levels of authority.
Comply with all financial, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and other Isanti Glass regulations and policies.
Furnace and Batch Plant Management
Responsible for cullet and furnace operations, as well as the chemical laboratory.
Control and evaluate results of laboratory measurements of raw materials, recycled cullet and finished glass.
Conduct process capability studies to ensure optimal process operation.
Responsible for the inspection and approval of raw materials entering the furnace and batch plant.
Ensure raw materials meet the required specifications.
Accountable for the inventory control of raw materials.
Responsible for the cullet plant, ensuring targets are met.
Ensure execution on maintenance plans to ensure furnace, batch and cullet reliability.
Allow for implementation of maintenance planning and scheduling for the furnace, batch and cullet and participate therein, to ensure alignment with the production strategy.
Implement and manage the Autonomous Operations (ATO) activities for all equipment for the furnace, batch and cullet.
Manage quality analysis equipment performance and initiate corrective action where required.
Conduct plant walkabouts on a daily basis.
Ensure operation of the furnace in accordance with applicable legislation.
Develop and implement Business Continuity Planning for the furnace, batch and cullet.
Ensure all equipment is calibrated and maintained according to work instructions & specifications.
Execute all statutory schedules on equipment.
Ensure all inspection schedules are executed as per legal requirements.
Ensure that plant and equipment is set up according to OEM specification.
Implement regular machine audits and ensure that ad-hoc work orders to restore equipment to standard or specification requirements are created.
Implement and oversee equipment commissioning after maintenance before hand over to team leader.
Ensure that equipment performance tests are conducted post-repairs.
People Management
Create and maintain a conducive environment for work to ensure optimum performance is realised for the benefit of the department using appropriate Human Resources policies and procedures.
Lead the team according to Isanti's leadership principles and values, including managing employee lifecycle from recruitment through to exit, performance management, training and development, discipline and grievance management, retention, reward and people administration to ensure a high-performance culture.
Comply with and implement all appropriate Human Resources policies and procedures.
Stakeholder Relations
Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure information, advice or opinions on relevant matters is made available & communicated appropriately & timeously.

SHEQ And Risk Management
Ensure compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, guidelines and Management of Change (MOC).
Ensure Adherence to Health and Safety measures and manage compliance to all ISO standards, HACCP etc.
Ensure departmental compliance with all appropriate by-laws, governance and risk management policies and procedures to reduce and remediate process, operational, regulatory and compliance risks for the department.

Academic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Experience
A minimum of 10 years' experience as a Melting Manager in the glass packaging manufacturing industry or similar FMCG or Manufacturing environment
Experience with lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
Knowledge of environmental compliance and safety standards for high-temperature operations.
Understanding of combustion process essential
Related experience supervising the furnace and batch operations essential.
