Mechanical Engineer (Junior-Mid Level)- Cape Town

An international design-and-build specialist in advanced modular structures is looking for a Junior to Mid-Level Mechanical Engineer to join its Cape Town-based engineering team. This role is ideal for a mechanically minded engineer who enjoys hands-on design, problem-solving at the interface of structure and fabrication, and seeing projects move from concept to factory floor to site.
You'll work alongside senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams on innovative steel-fabric and hybrid structural systems, contributing to both live projects and ongoing product development.
What you'll be doing
Mechanical design & engineering

• Develop mechanical design inputs, performance criteria, and compliance requirements for global projects.
• Perform calculations and checks for mechanical components such as connections, tensioning systems, and bespoke hardware.
• Model and validate components using CAD and simulation tools to assess strength, fatigue, and serviceability.
• Produce clear mechanical documentation including drawings, bills of materials, and assembly details.
• Select materials, fasteners, and finishes suitable for structural performance and environmental exposure.

Project support & coordination

• Assist with project delivery from detailed design through manufacturing and site installation.
• Coordinate with external engineers, consultants, and approval authorities on mechanical matters.
• Work closely with structural engineers, architects, and project teams within BIM-based workflows.
• Attend site visits to support installation sequencing, resolve mechanical issues, and verify as-built conditions.
• Contribute to value engineering and constructability improvements.

Manufacturing, testing & quality

• Support prototype development, factory testing, and acceptance processes.
• Review shop drawings and assist with fabrication problem-solving.
• Help maintain quality records and ensure alignment with specifications.
• Prepare handover documentation including maintenance and spare parts information.

Technical development & automation

• Assist with developing automation tools or scripts to streamline repetitive design tasks.
• Contribute to R&D initiatives for new connection systems, modular assemblies, and hybrid solutions.
• Help build internal design standards, checklists, and best-practice documentation.

What we're looking for
Qualifications & experience

• BEng (Mechanical) or MEng/MSc in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related field).
• 1-5 years' experience in mechanical design, ideally linked to structures, fabrication, or building systems.
• Exposure to taking designs through manufacturing or installation phases.
• Ability to produce clear, well-structured technical documentation.

Technical skills

• Proficiency in CAD-based mechanical design.
• Basic understanding of FEA and mechanical testing principles.
• Familiarity with international and local standards (EN, SANS, ASCE or similar).

Advantageous (but not essential)

• SolidWorks experience.
• Basic FEA tools (ANSYS or equivalent); RFEM exposure is a bonus.
• Basic scripting or automation skills (Python, VBA).
• Understanding of fabrication processes, welding, tolerances, and surface treatments.
• Experience working in BIM-coordinated project environments.

Salary Market related depending on the Candidate: R30 000- R40 000 Gross
