Role Description
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design, specification, installation, and maintenance support of mechanical systems used in water and wastewater treatment, pumping stations, pipelines, and related infrastructure. The role ensures that mechanical solutions are technically sound, compliant with industry standards, and aligned with project, safety, and operational requirements.
Key focus areas include pumps, valves, rotating equipment, mechanical plant layouts, equipment selection, commissioning support, and collaboration with civil, electrical, and process engineering teams to deliver efficient and reliable water infrastructure solutions.
PCI is a Design and Build, Mechanical Electrical and Piping (MEP) Contractor executing medium-to-large projects in the Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment industry. This role is suited to candidates with project design and development experience.
Professional registration as a Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist with ECSA is mandatory
. Candidates will be asked to present their PR Registration number upon application.
Key Responsibilities:
Ensure that mechanical engineering deliverables meets all project contractual deliverables and supports the PCI Africa tendering team.
Ensure mechanical engineering outputs are delivered on time and within budget.
Take full responsibility for technical suitability and functionality of detailed mechanical designs, equipment sizing, selecting and specifying while also meeting necessary client specifications. Detailed design works apply to process and mechanical equipment for:
o Water Treatment Works
o Waste Water Treatment Works
o Advanced technologies such as micro- and ultra-filtration etc.
Ensure the team's mechanical engineering tools are being fully utilized in a way that ensures maximum efficiency from the tools.
Interface with process engineering and electrical engineering to ensure functional requirements are met.
Collaborate with external structural engineers where professional sign-off is required.
Ensure that organizational knowledge is maintained for the mechanical engineering discipline by focusing on the solutions-/contract-execution arena. Templates, design methods, calculations must be developed, maintained and improved as required.
Support the development of a high-performing mechanical engineering team, providing guidance, mentoring and support across various disciplines to encourage a collaborative working environment.
Support the work breakdown structure that meets accounting requirements and that ensures work is executed systematically.
Support project managers by understanding the details of the project quality plan.
Have financial awareness to design cost effectively and identify areas where costs maybe saved.
Identifying and mitigating potential technical risks to PCI Africa.
Ensure seamless support is given to the tendering team by specifying equipment, assisting with technical adjudications and doing high-level (conceptual or preliminary) technical designs for pricing purposes
Support the processes and procedures in place as to comply with ISO 9001:2015
Role Qualifications and Experience:
BSc or BTech Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
5 Years of relevant project experience preferably in the Water & Wastewater Sector and/or mining industry
Medium to large project experience preferred.
Project design and development experience (Conceptual design - PFD, basic design - P&ID, detailed design - fabrication GA's and piping GA's, construction, commissioning, and handover).
Development of equipment lists, line lists, valve lists.
System design - Pumps, compressors, blowers, feeder systems, chemical dosing systems.
Piping design and support of 3D model development.
Safety and quality reviews - model review, risk review, HAZOP experience.
Equipment selection - experience in technical bid evaluations ensuring compliance with legislation and client specifications.
M&P procurement experience - development of data sheets and procurement specifications (Scope of Supply).
Sufficient on-site technical support during construction and/or commissioning based experience.
In the process of registering as a Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa.
