Mechanical Engineer (cad / Solidworks) – Heavy Manufacturing & Fabrication

Job Description

We are seeking a technically strong Mechanical Engineer with extensive CAD and SolidWorks draughting experience to join a leading engineering and fabrication company based in the East Rand. The ideal candidate will hold a BTech or National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and have solid experience producing detailed engineering drawings for heavy manufacturing, fabrication, machine components, and industrial equipment.
This role is suited to a hands-on engineer who enjoys translating concepts into high-quality designs and drawings, supporting manufacturing teams, and working within a fast-paced engineering workshop environment
Education & Qualifications

  • BTech Mechanical Engineering or National Diploma (ND) in Mechanical Engineering
Experience
  • 3-5+ years' experience in:
  • Mechanical draughting and design
  • SolidWorks (Advanced proficiency required)
  • CAD modelling, assembly drawings, and manufacturing drawings
  • Heavy manufacturing and fabrication environments
  • Sheet metal, structural steel, welding, machining, and component detailing
  • Experience interacting with workshop, fabrication teams, and production engineering
Key Responsibilities
Design & Draughting
  • Create detailed 2D and 3D mechanical designs using SolidWorks and other CAD tools
  • Produce fabrication drawings, general arrangement (GA) drawings, and detailed component drawings
  • Maintain drawing standards, revision control, and ensure all documentation is accurate and compliant
Engineering Support
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers, production teams, and workshop supervisors on projects
  • Interpret technical specifications, customer requirements, and manufacturing constraints
  • Conduct design calculations and select appropriate materials for heavy-duty applications
Manufacturing & Fabrication Interface
  • Provide clear technical guidance to boilermakers, welders, machinists, and assembly teams
  • Ensure drawings are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with fabrication capabilities
  • Assist with resolving technical queries from the workshop or fabrication floor
Quality & Compliance
  • Ensure all designs meet engineering standards, safety requirements, and industry regulations
  • Participate in design reviews, quality checks, and project sign-offs
  • Maintain accurate documentation, BOMs, and drawing registers
Additional Advantages
  • Experience with FEA, stress analysis, or simulation software
  • Exposure to CNC machining or tooling design
  • Knowledge of ISO Standards for fabrication and manufacturing
  • Experience in heavy industrial sectors such as mining, steel, materials handling, or machinery manufacturing
