Purpose of the role
Reporting directly to the Head of Operations of Sanlam Private Wealth, you will own the day-to-day running of all client and certain organisational tax reporting processes. The position will work closely with Group Tax, external advisors / vendors as well as client facing staff within the business. While the primary focus of the position is Tax, there is a key influence on other areas such as client onboarding, projects, wider client reporting and an integration with the operational IT processes.
What will you do?
Strategy, Vision and Leadership
Oversee strategic objectives with regards to all clients and select organisational tax reporting deliverables within the business
Drive improvement in existing tax infrastructure, outputs and processes
Ensure that SPW remains abreast of all tax reporting obligations to SARS and otherwise
Operations
Assess current organisational structure of the department and facilitate improvements in tax reporting delivery
Ensure on-time delivery of tax reporting obligations for clients (Second Provisional and Final Tax Statements), SARS (IT3B, IT3C, FATCA & CRS, STT and DWT), and the U.S. Revenue Authority (1099 and 1042)
Preparation, communication and monitoring of budgetary targets
Project Consulting & Technical Support
Subject matter expert on all matters affecting tax reporting through providing technical expertise and guidance as required from client facing staff
Provide insight on projects which may affect the tax operational requirements
System Efficiency & Improvement:
Lead efforts to enhance reporting systems through:
+ Root cause analysis and ensuring that corrective actions are applied across all downstream systems and reporting functions
+ Implementing quick-win process improvements to boost team efficiency Coordinate external vendors and internal tech teams during system upgrades
Ensure tax reporting software is regularly updated to comply with new legislation and regulatory changes
Control and risk management
Upgrade and implement appropriate system of policies, procedures, and internal controls to address department specific risks
Ensure the design, implementation, and monitoring of controls impacting tax reporting outputs and overall tax risk management are adequate and compliant
Guide the creation of standard operating procedures and training material
People Management
Build and lead an effective and cohesive tax reporting team
In consultation with HR implement effective people management practices
Performance management of staff
Qualification and experience
Qualified Chartered Accountant with trainee internship at either of the big 4 audit firms (PwC, E&Y, Delloitte, KPMG)
Audit / other experience on listed clients, preferably in the Financial Services industry
Strong academic performance in tax-related subjects
Knowledge and skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
In-depth knowledge of internal control concepts, preferably in a financial services context
Collaboration - experience in working inclusively with others / in a team context
Resilience - demonstrated experience in meeting deadlines under pressure
Excellent analytical and numerical skills
Very proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and similar applications
