Linux System Administrator
Job Description
We are a leading scientific research institute (in the field of genetics / molecular biology), looking for a Linux Systems Administrator to join our team. This individual would be passionate about designing and managing infrastructure to support scientific research.
The applicant would be keen to learn and develop best practices for building and managing Linux systems, including automation (using e.g. Ansible and Terraform), monitoring (using Prometheus and Grafana) and writing documentation. While we are a small team (less than 10) we collaborate extensively with others across the African continent and expect the candidate to communicate well and be self-motivated.
Ongoing projects are focused on deploying novel computing environments (based on OpenStack and Ceph) and catering for the storage and computing needs of the institute's researchers.
Basic requirements:
A Degree or Diploma in a relevant field (e.g. Computer Science)
andAt least 2 years experience in Linux Systems Administration
including:Network configuration (Ethernet and switches, TCP/IP, routing, DNS) knowledge Experience with automation using shell scripts, Python and Ansible Linux operating systems configuration (adding/removing/configuring packages) User management including via directory systems such as LDAP and FreeIPA Sending mail notifications using SMTP and SMTP servers Deploying software using containers (i.e. Docker and similar) Storage configuration using RAID Use of Git and Github to manage version control (e.g. for scripts and configuration files)
Advantageous would be:
Knowledge of systems programming languages such as C and C++ Experience with monitoring using Prometheus, Grafana and Influx DB Webserver configuration using Nginx or Apache Container orchestration using Kubernetes Experience with Ceph Experience with OpenStack
The post will be 1 year initially with the option to renew for a longer contract based on performance.

Pay: R45000,00 - R55000,00 per month
