At Herbert Smith Freehills, we are always looking for talented law graduates to join our Alternative Legal Services (ALT) team in Johannesburg. Legal Analysts are part of our legal team, working closely with highly experienced qualified lawyers on the delivery of client work.

Our Respond team members are permanent part-time employees of the Johannesburg office who work on a flexible basis while developing their careers with us. All Respond employees have minimum contracted hours of 7.5 hours per week, although are expected to work more hours than this, often on short notice, as and when required.
The ALT team is located in our Johannesburg office, however, there is flexibility to deliver your role remotely within South Africa, if preferred.

As well as working on Disputes matters, you may also have the opportunity to be exposed to Corporate matters as detailed below, dependent on business need:

Dispute Resolution: ALT Disputes is experienced in complex large scale document review, sensitive and time critical investigations and regulatory matters, consumer claims management and large scale remediation schemes. Our teams work closely with and provide support to other Herbert Smith Freehills practice groups and we are continually expanding our service offerings. We are experts in complex review elements including legal professional privilege, commercial sensitivity and data protection working across all industry sectors including financial services, energy, retail, TMT and construction.

Corporate: ALT Corporate works closely with HSF's Corporate practice as it guides the world's commercial organisations through all stages of their corporate development, including M&A, capital markets, investment funds, commercial contracts, corporate restructurings and regulatory matters. We also work directly with many of the firm's key clients, supporting them with day-to-day "business-as-usual" legal work, often as a seamless extension to their in-house legal teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Legal Analysts work closely with Lawyers, Legal Managers and Senior Legal Managers and primary responsibilities will include:
  • Conducting work, under the supervision of senior lawyers, on large-scale legal matters.
  • Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of relevant areas of law to the Alternative Legal Services practice.
  • Ensuring compliance with financial disciplines on matters (e.g. daily time-recording).
  • Carry out activities as specified by the project team to ensure the matter and/or project is delivered in an efficient and timely matter.
  • Providing general support to the Legal Managers and Lawyers.

Skills, experience and qualifications

Skills, Experience and Qualifications
  • You must be a current graduate of Law (LLB/LLM or equivalent).
  • Ability to review, analyse and organise documentary and factual evidence.
  • Excellent attention to detail; aims to get it right first time.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Aptitude for learning (and becoming proficient in) the use of software and IT applications, including Relativity, and using search terms intelligently to navigate large databases/document management systems.

Eligibility:
  • Candidates must have completed their LLB and or LLM (or equivalent)
  • We are unable to accept applications from individuals who complete their studies later this year 2023 and beyond.
  • All applicants must have the legal right to work in South Africa at the time of application.
