The Sanlam Retail Affluent (SRA) cluster is responsible for Sanlam's retail business in South Africa. SRA provides clients across different market segments (entry-level, middle-income, affluent, professional market and business owners) with a comprehensive range of appropriate and competitive financial solutions. These include traditional life insurance risk and savings products, investment, retirement, health and fiduciary services. Designed to facilitate long-term wealth creation, protection and niche financing, these solutions are engineered around client needs.

What will you do?

  • Provide various business units with on time, up to date understandable, practical and relevant legal advice.
  • Analyse disputes; consider, negotiate, implement and manage appropriate solutions.
  • Facilitate the involvement of external lawyers.
  • Consider practical and cost-effective alternatives, risks and trends.
  • Consider short and long term implications of impending regulatory amendments, as well as implications for the industry.
  • Negotiate, draft and vet all required legal agreements including but not limited to binders, outsourcing, intermediary agreements, SLA's, re-insurance agreements, data sharing agreements, NDA's, joint venture agreements, cross-border transactional agreements.
  • Research, prepare and draft opinions required.
  • Conduct and prepare impact analysis of regulatory changes.
  • Manage litigation matters.
  • Assist with risk and retirement fund product matters.
  • Represent Sanlam Retail Affluent at required internal and external stakeholder engagements.
Role Requirements:

Qualifications:
  • LLB or higher Law degree
  • Admitted Attorney
Experience:
  • At least 5 years' relevant experience within the Financial Services industry
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating contracts
  • Experience in managing litigation
Knowledge:
  • Good knowledge of legislation impacting Sanlam Life including the FSRA, Insurance Act and Prudential Standards, Retirement funds legislation, FAIS Act and Code of Conduct.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of contract negotiating and drafting.
  • Sound knowledge of legal research and writing of legal opinions.
  • Analysis of and determining business impact of regulatory developments.
  • Good knowledge of litigation and ADR processes.
