Job Description


An established, and well rated asset manager is looking for a Legal Advisor to join their team in Cape Town.

The main focus of the role is to provide legal advice to the business as part of a high-performance, client centric team.

This is an Employment Equity opportunity.

This role is suited to an admitted attorney holding an LLB or equivalent degree. You should have a minimum of 2-5 years' experience post qualification, within an in-house financial services legal department. A sound knowledge of legislation and regulatory directives pertinent to the financial services industry is a must.

  • Adaptability: flexibility to adapt to changing environments, staying current with industry trends and adjusting legal strategies accordingly.
Some key result areas of the role include:
  • Working within a team of legal professionals that provide legal advice, legal risk management and support and direction to the company. This includes strategic legal input into projects and assessing legal trends and patterns to make recommendations to the business.
  • Have a detailed understanding of the financial services regulatory regime, particularly for investment managers.
  • Drafting and vetting of legal agreements (in particular investment management agreements, GMRAs, ISDAs and market funding agreement).
  • Understanding and staying informed of regulatory changes, and providing strategic input to the business on how to implement pending legislation.
  • Conducting of high-quality research on applicable legislative frameworks, policies and laws; provision of legal opinions, memoranda and other legal documents.
  • Interacting with the Compliance and Risk functions and assisting to embed a compliance culture in the business.
  • Identifying and reporting on legal risks and provide legal solutions in mitigation thereof.
  • Ensuring efficient management of contracts
  • Conducting or participating in litigation if required.
  • Legal sign off on investment documentation.
