Lecturer: Department of Anthropology






The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is a research-led institution recognised nationally and internationally for its sustained contribution to democratic change in South Africa. The Faculty of Arts & Humanities seeks to appoint a Lecturer in a permanent position in the Department of Anthropology. The Department of Anthropology is a vibrant space with a growing cohort of postgraduate students, and a record of research and teaching in the fields of Anthropology of Health; Men and Masculinities; Aesthetics, Performance and Popular Culture; Human-Plants Interfaces, Legal Anthropology and Religion and Spirituality. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute in significant ways to research, teaching, and supervision, as well as to perform normal administrative tasks and duties.





The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:


Develop a research and publication profile; Contribute to the learning and teaching programme at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; Teach in the key areas and thematics of the current curriculum; Supervise postgraduate students; Actively participate in departmental, faculty, and university administration; Participate in community engagement.

Minimum Requirements



A Master's degree in Anthropology or cognate discipline; a burgeoning track record in research and potential for future ground-breaking; publications (at least one article in a peer-reviewed journal); experience in teaching relevant to Anthropology.

Added advantages:


A completed PhD degree in Anthropology or cognate discipline; A research track record that leans towards the application of ethnographic method and theory; Evidence of successful teaching and supervision of postgraduate student work (including Honours research essays); A strong foundation in critical ethnographic method and theory; Experience with teaching in writing intensive curricula.

Computer literacy and e-learning skills. Knowledge and skills in the core strategic areas, namely learning and teaching, research and scholarship, community engagement as well as professional leadership.
