RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
Teaching at second-year or third-year level for astronomy courses;
Supervision of Honours, MSc and PhD students within the astronomy group;
Pursuing an independent research programme aligned with MeerKAT, the upcoming SKAO and other leading cm-wave radio telescopes, which may include multiwavelength synergies.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A PhD in Astronomy or related fields;
Teaching experience at undergraduate and/or honours levels.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
A proven track record of research in one of the following fields: radio astronomy science/techniques, astronomical big data, extragalactic astronomy, VLBI.
Successful supervision at either Honours or MSc level.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
Strong expertise in observational radio astronomy science/techniques and/or VLBI;
Familiarity with astronomical data analysis, AI/ML techniques;
Evidence of attracting independent research funding;
Successful supervision at PhD and/or Postdoctoral level.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
