Job Purpose

The Lead: Port Elizabeth Airportxe2x80x99s role is to manage all facets of airport operations, including, bookings and reservations, baggage control, LPO, security, time schedules, effective resource allocation, etc.

The incumbent of this role is responsible for efficient airport operations, which involves the development and execution of operational plans. To ensure efficiency the incumbent is required to communicate the plans and operational procedures to the relevant stakeholders and to ensure that all staff members are adequately trained and competent to perform their duties according to set standards.

The role is to achieve the role outputs and will be expected to have insight into the various operational systems (including booking and reservation system, ticketing system, baggage control system, baggage management system, SAP system, etc.) and how they interact with each other in the operational environment. In addition, the role requires strong insight into the various operational functions, and how they are supported by various regulations, policies and procedures. The role will support the Acting Manager: Domestic and Regional Airport Operations by providing integrated information regarding airport operations.

The incumbent needs to provide functional leadership to the Operational team, ensuring that the station is appropriately structured, resourced, trained and audited on a continuous basis. The role will be required to deliver sustainable business results within a two to three-year period of strategy implementation.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Manage and optimise resources and technology in area of responsibility
  • Manage the implementation of Governance and Risk Management policies, processes and systems
  • Maintain and monitor regular and timeous reporting of information
  • Manages projects to contribute to the optimisation of the department/ division
  • Ensure excellent and consistent customer service, product knowledge at airport and fully maned touch points
  • Identify company stakeholders, collaborators and partners, synergistic to projects and programmes, to support the execution of the corporate strategy and ensure effective working relationships
  • Represent the organisation to stakeholders, associates and partners and maintain professional, effective and amicable relationships to ensure Airlinexe2x80x99s interests are upheld
  • Negotiate the relevant contracts that contribute to the achievement of the Operational strategy
  • Communicate the Operational implications of proposals to relevant stakeholders (inclusive of financial and risk issues)
  • Provide robust but constructive challenge to business stakeholders to maximise profits from improved operational effectiveness
  • Respond appropriately to issues raised by industry regulators
  • Provide regular and timeous information to all stakeholders regarding operational challenges, in order to facilitate decision making
  • Resolving disputes and grievances between staff members and Line Management
  • Negotiation with Stakeholders (Airports Company, Client airlines, Customs, Immigration, etc.)
  • Management of service providers and third-party contracts and monitor adherence to various related SLAxe2x80x99s at all times and responding to any irregularities that occur with services delivered
  • Monitor supplier performance/SLAxe2x80x99s
  • Manage performance measurement across the station to identify areas of weakness and improvements to GHA Management and SAA Manager
  • Ensuring that contingency plans are in place in the event of strikes
  • Planning of operations (peak periods, low periods, special events, normal operation plans)
  • Strategic planning with revenue management and pricing with regard to certain routes that are not profitable with a view to make more profitable
  • Ensuring compliance with safety security regulatory requirements and aviation laws
  • Ensuring that the SHE Committee is in place and health and safety requirements are uphold
  • Engage the relevant governance structures to develop short-medium, and long-term operational plans
  • Ensure that appropriate structures, infrastructure, resources and processes are in place to enable the operational execution of the strategy and plan
  • Ensure that the implemented operational strategy is managed, measured, monitored and evaluated
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelorxe2x80x99s degree in Business Management or relevant field at NQF level 7 and/or 7 xe2x80x93 10 yearsxe2x80x99 Airport Operations experience, of which 5 years is at supervisory level
  • Experience in Tourism and /or hospitality is critical
  • Training in all areas of airport operations
Knowledge and Skills
  • Legislation governing operational and labour practices (including Labour Relations Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Employment Equity Act, PFMA)
  • Knowledge about Aviation laws (SACAA, FAA, Airline, etc.)
  • National key-point security regulations
  • Knowledge of systems (check-in, reservation, SAP, ticketing, baggage control and management)
  • Understand operational practices and supporting policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of tender/bidding processes and procedures
  • Knowledge of budgeting and cost control
  • Knowledge of reporting systems
