Job Purpose
SLR has an opportunity for an experienced Senior Consultant to join our rapidly growing Earth Science Service Line. They need to be an enthusiastic, multitasking individual with high level of energy, who is a team player with initiative. They will be part of a team of land quality and remediation specialists delivering soil and water services for various clients served within mining & minerals, energy/oil & gas, industry, power and infrastructure sectors across SADC and Africa. Projects cover waste assessments and classification, contaminated land assessment, environmental liability management and remediation projects.
The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated senior professional with excellent technical, management, client service, business development, and people skills and a proven track record in consulting.
They must communicate confidently and effectively with clients, colleagues, regulators, and sub-contractors. A sound knowledge of risk-based approaches to sustainable environmental management and relevant contaminated land and waste legislation is critical.
As a senior member of the Land Quality and Remediation (LQR) team, you will be key to growing, providing senior technical expertise, and mentoring staff within your region and across Southern Africa. You will be part of a team of 29 in the South African Land team.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor of Science (BSc), Geology / Hydrogeology / Earth Science or similar, and a postgraduate degree in related field.
>7 years' relevant work
experience
and >3 years Project Management experience.
Proficiency in MS Office with advanced Excel and Word knowledge.
Hold a relevant professional certification.
Willingness and ability to travel
Valid driver's license.
Responsibilities:
Waste management/classification experience, ideally also with some contamination assessment experience.
Experience in the mining/industry sectors.
Demonstratable practical experience in the following legislation:

SANS 10234 waste classification
+
Waste Classification and Management Regulations of 23 August 2013 (GN R.634 of 2013);
+
Waste assessment according to the National Norms and Standards for the assessment of waste for landfill disposal (GN R.635 of 2013); and
+
Identification of barrier requirements as per the National Norms and Standards for the Disposal of Waste to Landfill (GN R.636 of 23 August 2013)
Marketing to grow the service offering, with the support of other earth science professionals in the southern Africa offices.
Provide strategic and technical consulting advice to clients and SLR staff and managers working on contaminated site/remediation projects and proposals in southern Africa.
Mentor and train staff; identify and implement strategies to enhance SLR's technical expertise and innovation related to contaminated site assessment and management.
Act as a technical focal point to ensure deliverables (proposals, site work, reporting, presentations etc.) are to a high technical quality and meet client needs and the highest standards of industry best practice.
Manage complex and significant projects and proposals, budgets, and schedules.
Complete detailed QA/QC reviews of technical work, reports, and proposals.
Drive staff compliance with SLR administrative procedures and processes and KPIs.
Coordinate the delivery of projects at a regional level while maintaining effective day to day communication with other Regional SLR leads and the Client Portfolio Managers.
Steward SLR's "One Team, All Safe" Health & Safety culture while also imparting knowledge and the practical application of the Health & Safety requirements unique to contaminated land investigations, as well as client-specific needs.
Proactively pursue, develop, and enact business development strategies to expand LQR's client base within the region and across Southern Africa and enhance SLR's marketplace reputation and presence the technical discipline.
Undertake Business Development activities, including making presentations to existing and potential clients, professional and industry associations, regulators, as well as internally.
