About the role

This is not a desk-bound job. It's for a reporter who wants to be out in the city, chasing leads, listening to voices that don't always get heard, and translating it all into stories that spark debate, drive understanding, and sometimes even shake things up.



You'll cover everything from local governance to service delivery, the environment, business, and the social pulse of Johannesburg. You'll pitch and pursue original ideas, break exclusive news with accuracy and speed, and deliver journalism that lives up to Daily Maverick's values of truth, accuracy, independence, and impact.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum requirements

At least 3 to 5 years' writing and reporting experience (digital-first experience a plus). Proven ability to gather and verify information, and to interview with confidence and rigour. A nose for detail and context that makes your stories credible, sharp, and unforgettable. Deep respect for journalistic ethics: truth, accuracy, transparency, independence. Digital fluency: CMS, Google Workspace, Slack, social platforms -- and the savvy to spot disinformation vs fact. A healthy curiosity to develop visualisations and graphics Track record of delivering under pressure and meeting deadlines.

Duties and Responsibilities

Cover a broad range of beats: service delivery, environment, governance, social issues, and more. Find, pitch, and tell stories that matter to Joburg -- yet resonate nationally and globally. Break exclusive news with urgency, clarity, and accuracy. Seek out stories of resilience, innovation, and hope that reflect the full complexity of Johannesburg. Build and maintain a strong network of sources across the city. Collaborate with editors and colleagues to sharpen stories for maximum impact. * Uphold the highest ethical and legal standards in reporting.
