Job Description

eMedia, in proud partnership with MICT SETA (Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority), is offering a 12-month Internship Programme for the year 2025/2026. Interns will be hosted at Media Film Service in the position of News and Broadcast Intern.




About the Job





The individual in the role is required to provide hands-on support in news planning, content production, field coordination, and editorial processes, gaining practical newsroom experience while contributing to the delivery of accurate, engaging, and timely news content aligned with eNCA's editorial vision.


About the Company





eNCA, also known as eNews Channel Africa, is a 24-hour television news broadcaster owned by e.tv that focuses on African stories and events. Launched in June 2008, the channel is South Africa's first and most-watched 24-hour news service.


Roles and Responsibilities




News Planning & Editorial Coordination





Assisting with planning, developing, and executing daily news bulletins, ensuring comprehensive and engaging content.



Collaborating with Editors and Reporters to determine the news agenda for the day.



Ensuring that news content aligns with the channel's editorial vision and audience needs.



Identifying key stories and breaking news developments, prioritizing coverage accordingly.


Content Production & Story Development





Assisting with scriptwriting and production of news stories, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and balance.



Coordinating with Field Reporters and correspondents for live coverage and breaking news.



Assisting with the integration of visuals, graphics, and multimedia elements to enhance storytelling.



Writing well-researched, accurate scripts aligned with visuals for balanced reporting.



Making sure that the check list completed before each show is followed.



Editing scripts, headlines, and segment structures before broadcasts.



Identifying newsworthy events, conduct in-depth research, conduct research and write scripts on topics prior to broadcasts.



Staying updated with the latest local, national, and international news.



Researching and gathering information on current events and news stories.



Maintaining a high accuracy rate with minimal fact-checking revisions required.



Compiling and providing info pack for the Anchors for guest interviews.


Technical





Learning newsroom workflow systems (Dalet).



Editing visuals, cutting headlines, bytes, interviews, and overlays per script.



Conducting research on program topics, including electronic and social media.



Retrieving relevant visuals from archives.


Stakeholder & Team Collaboration





Working closely with newsroom teams, technical staff, and graphics designers to ensure smooth production.



Coordinating with digital and social media teams to align broadcast content with online distribution.



Building and maintaining relationships with sources, experts, and analysts for on-air insights and interviews.


Planning Outside Broadcasts





Assisting with liaising with event organisers to secure venues, times, and dates.



Arranging guests for live crossings and interviews.



Conducting assessment for suitability of venue.



Assisting with ensuring diverse, timely live interviews per news desk direction.


Field Coordination





Helping coordinate Reporters, Camera crews, and Technical teams for live and recorded productions.



Conducting site inspections and assess the suitability of venues for broadcast requirements.



Assisting with on-site logistics, including transport, permits, equipment, and venue access.



Serving as the assistant liaison between the field team and the newsroom.



Completing Individual Development Plan.



Participating in peer and team learning initiatives.


Compliance & Safety





Ensuring all field/production activities adhere to health and safety protocols, legal standards, and ethical guidelines.



Manage press credentials and access in sensitive or high-risk areas.

Requirements



National Senior Certificate - Essential



National Diploma in Journalism and/or Broadcast (NQF Level 6) - Essential


Competencies





Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)



Intermediate English language proficiency



Strong attention to detail and accuracy, ensuring thorough and careful completion of tasks



Ability to monitor and follow up on delegated assignments and projects effectively



Commitment to continuous learning by actively seeking and applying new knowledge and skills



Effective participation in meetings, considering the needs and contributions of others



Good planning and organising skills to manage tasks and ensure efficient work completion




Additional Requirements





Must be a South African citizen



Must be under the age of 35



Candidates who have previously participated or are currently engaged in a SETA-funded internship are not eligible.
