Job Description

IN-SERVICE TRAINEE - ENGINEERING: An opportunity exists for one suitable students to gain on the job experience as Engineering In-Service Trainee for a period of 12 months. These positions are based at Wadeville.
KEY OUTPUT: To maintain (inspect and adjust) and repair equipment proactively as per maintenance targets in order to continually improve department efficiency, to optimize equipment availability and to minimize losses and risk.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Knowledge:
An understanding of electrical, mechanical, physics and mathematics related to the engineering industry and practices.
Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular inspections of building systems and equipment to identify potential issues.
  • Assist in routine maintenance tasks to ensure equipment operates efficiently and meets performance targets.
  • Support the repair of malfunctioning equipment, collaborating with senior engineers to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Document repairs and maintenance actions taken to maintain an accurate history of equipment performance.
  • Analyse maintenance data and equipment performance metrics to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Participate in developing strategies to enhance equipment reliability and reduce downtime.
  • Apply knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and physical principles to diagnose and resolve equipment problems.
  • Study and understand relevant mathematical concepts to support engineering calculations and assessments.
  • Follow safety protocols and procedures to minimize risks during maintenance activities.
  • Ensure all maintenance work complies with relevant regulations and industry standards.
  • Work closely with senior engineers and maintenance staff to gain insights and guidance.
  • Communicate effectively with team members regarding equipment status, maintenance needs, and improvement suggestions.
  • Engage in training opportunities to enhance technical skills and knowledge relevant to the engineering field.
  • Seek feedback from mentors and supervisors to improve performance and understanding of maintenance processes.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs.
  • Prepare reports on equipment status and maintenance outcomes for review by management.
  • Participate in team meetings focused on process improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute ideas for optimizing maintenance procedures and enhancing overall departmental efficiency.
  • Assist in special projects related to building maintenance or upgrades, providing support as needed.
Skills, Experience & Education
Qualifications: * Grade 12 Maths and Maths Literacy - Passed at 40% and above
  • Two South African Languages - Passed at 40% and above
  • Studying towards National Diploma in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or related qualification
  • Must be a South African Citizen
  • Must be Employment Equity candidate
  • Must not have previously completed the same qualification/learnership at another company or organization (please check with the L&D Skills Sustainability Team if you are unsure).
  • Must have been unemployed at the time of appointment
  • Must be between 18-35 years of age.
