Job Description

Introduction
Our client, a leading provider of comprehensive mining solutions servicing the mining and construction industry, operating across multiple sites in the Northern Cape, is seeking an experienced and strategic Head of Safety to lead and manage all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) functions across its open-pit mining operations, including iron ore and manganese sites.
The ideal candidate will bring a minimum of 10 years' experience in mining safety management, with a strong track record of driving safety culture, compliance, and operational excellence in complex open-pit environments. This is a site-based fixed-term contract offering a unique opportunity to lead safety across a high-performing mining group.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and oversee the company's Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) strategy across all mining operations.
Ensure compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and other relevant legislation.
Lead site safety teams and build a culture of zero harm and proactive risk management.
Oversee and monitor incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective actions.
Conduct regular audits, inspections, and safety reviews to ensure adherence to standards.
Provide expert advice on safety systems, procedures, and best practices.
Drive continuous improvement in safety performance, training, and leadership engagement.
Manage stakeholder relationships, including with regulatory authorities, contractors, and site management.
Prepare and present comprehensive safety performance reports to executive leadership.
Champion behavioural safety initiatives and promote operational accountability across all sites.
Desired Experience & Qualification
Minimum 10 years' experience in mining safety management, including at least 5 years in a senior or leadership role.
Strong exposure to open-pit mining, specifically iron ore and manganese operations.
Relevant Safety, Mining, or Engineering qualification (e.g. Diploma/Degree in Safety Management, Mining Engineering, or related field).
SAMTRAC, NEBOSH, or COMSOC certifications essential.
In-depth knowledge of MHSA, environmental legislation, and risk management principles.
Proven leadership in implementing safety management systems across multiple sites.
Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Strong ability to influence, lead, and build trust across teams.
