Our client comprises investment, life assurance, asset management, risk products, healthcare and general insurance, and has at its core one of the largest advice-based distribution capabilities in the South African industry. The company is now increasingly perceived as a leading savings and investment brand.
They now seek a group credit investment: portfolio manager to join their team. You will report to the head: portfolio management within the group credit investment team who reports to the CEO of the division - this is a new and exciting portfolio.
JOB DESCRIPTION WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

  • You will be responsible for the management and monitoring of credit portfolios within the scope of the GCI team. Underlying credit within scope includes investment and retail credit;
  • You will be responsible for managing and optimising the shareholder credit portfolios, driving the group credit plan, supporting business unit strategies and ensuring robust governance, risk management and reporting across all credit-related activities;
  • You will be required to have a strong analytical background, deep market knowledge and proven leadership abilities to ensure portfolio performance aligns with company's risk and return objectives;
  • You will be responsible for portfolio management: oversee the construction, monitoring and rebalancing of credit portfolios across multiple asset classes, including bonds, structured credit, loans, fund investments and other fixed income products;
  • You will be responsible for credit analysis: conduct in-depth credit analysis on existing and potential investments, including fundamental, technical and quantitative assessments;
  • You will be responsible for overnight loan origination: ownership of all overnight loan origination including sourcing, credit due diligence and preparation and negotiation of legal documentation.
  • You will be responsible for risk management: identify, measure and manage credit risk exposures. Implement risk mitigation strategies in accordance with firm policies and regulatory requirements;
  • You will be responsible for performance monitoring: track and report portfolio performance against benchmarks and targets. Provide actionable insights to senior management;
  • You will be responsible for investment strategy: contribute to the development and execution of credit investment strategies based on macroeconomic trends, market conditions and client objectives;
  • You will be responsible for stakeholder engagement: communicate portfolio strategy, performance and risk to internal and external stakeholders, including credit committees and clients;
  • You will be responsible for team leadership: mentor junior analysts and portfolio managers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance team environment;
  • You will be responsible for compliance and reporting: ensure all portfolio activities adhere to regulatory standards and internal compliance requirements. Prepare and review documentation for audits and regulatory inquiries.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • You have a Masters degree in finance, economics, business, or CA(SA) - this is strongly preferred;
  • You are a CFA - this would be a distinct advantage;
  • You have a minimum of 6 years' current, relevant experience in credit portfolio management or a similar role within asset management, banking, or financial services including a minimum of 3 years' experience as a credit analyst in an earlier career;
  • You have an in-depth knowledge of credit markets, fixed income securities and risk management frameworks;
  • You have a proven track record of managing large and complex credit portfolios with consistent performance;
  • You have advanced proficiency in portfolio management and analytics tools (e.g., Bloomberg, Excel, risk analytics platforms);
  • You have demonstrated leadership and team development experience.
